In my family, "west of Montreal" turned out to be Pickering, Ontario
County (near TORONTO)!! We finally concluded they said Montreal since
that was probably the best know reference point in the area.

I don't think either Montreal West or Cote St. Luc were around in the
early
1800s. Montreal West was established, I believe, principally for the
executives of one of the railroads (CN or CP, I don't know which). I
would
venture to guess that West of Montreal could mean almost anything....
the
area around Ste. Anne de Bellevue to Vaudreuil etc etc etc.

There's a suburb called Montreal West and there's also Cote St. Luc that
would've been around then.
