Roger - today is your lucky day! Massena is quite user friendly. I'd
recommend writing a letter to Theresa Sharpe, the town historian, at the
Massena Museum. They do have some family files, but probably relate more to
families with several generations in Massena. The Massena Observer started
publication in 1891 and there are some very detailed. It was because of a
detailed obit I was able to find out the actual townland where my family
hailed from in County Antrim. If you have specific dates, you can try the
librarian at the Massena Public LIbrary. They do have some early obits from
ca. 1900-1920 that have been indexed. Relative to doing searches of
probate records, the St. Lawrence Co. court does searches at $75 per hour,
but you can hire Patricia Dominie, local genealogist, for $10 per hour to
look up any wills or intestate records. This is by far the most economical
route. The St. Lawrence Co. Historical Association in Canton has a listing
of all cemetery surveys that have been conducted in St. Lawrence Co. I
believe that they have St. Peters (Catholic) and Pine Grove
(non-denominational city cemetery) cemeteries. They charge $10.00 an hour
for research. St. Lawrence University library has all the newspapers that
were printed in Massena on microfilm in their archives. Massena Town
Clerk will search vital records from 1881 for free. Town clerks in upstate
New York can be difficult- some want $11.00 just to look up one record and
not even give you a copy of the actual record. Massena, by far, is the best
town to do research in in St. Lawrence County. Many records or extracts of
vital records for St. Lawrence Co. are available through LDS.
Try Anne Cady's webpage and the St. Lawrence Co. USGENWEB page.
Good luck.
I hope that this helps.
