Maureen,

In an "Atlas of the City of Montreal (Vol. #1) - surveyed 1881 & revised to June 1890 - "From a Special Survey & Official Plans Showing All Buildings & Names of Owners" by Charles Goad - Civil Engineer, there are only 3 "even numbers" indicated as being on that side of Basin Street (the North side) which ran along the left hand side of the St. Ann's Church as you faced the front doors of the Church.. Those numbers were 18, 32, & 40. The #18 is shown as being approximately at mid point along the length of the side of the Church. The #'s32 & 40 are shown as being farther west along Basin Street, both in front of a large building that appears to be facing on Basin Street, and whose western side ran north along St. Augustin St. for about 1/3 the length of the block, which bloch then meets McCord St..The building at the corner of Basin St. & St. Augustin St. would appear to have been the Residence??? of St. Ann's Church as it is shown as being connected to one side of the!
Church (towards the back) by a walkway. This Residence???, (or un-named building), occupies an area equal to about 3/4 the size of the Church itself. There's also another another un-named building located (on the same block) in the point of the "TRIANGULAR" block formed by St. Augustin & McCord Streets. Maybe someone else might know if this is where St. Ann's School was located.
From what I can tell from this survey map - and I'm a retired industrial design draftsman - there would not have been enough space between the side of the Church on the Basin Street for a house or any other kind of building. Nor would there have been enough space along Basin Street between the Church and what I refer to as a Residence??? at the corner of St. Augustin St.. Perhaps between the revised date of the above mentioned survey and the date that you indicate - 1917, maybe these addresses were in fact changed. But again, since the Church is the first building at the eastern end of Basin Street, and the only other building on that side of Basin Street would be the Residence???, I don't understand why they would have changed the street addresses if no other building could have been erected along that side of Basin Street.
I know I haven't solved your puzzle, but I just thought maybe this info might lead you to some other clues.
Question. If one has stolen a piece of a St. Ann's Church floor after its demolition, is this a mortal or venial sin? The way I look at it is, "better a memento in my walkway than just another piece of unrecognizable landfill".

Good hunting,

Murray Quinn
