Hi Sheila,
Founded in 1854 by the Fabrique of the Notre Dame de Montreal
Parish after the Saint Antoine Cemetery near Dominion Square (the
present-day Place du Canada) became too small to accommodate Montreal's
Catholic population, the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery is now ranked the
third largest cemetery in all of North America. Designed by the renowned
landscape architect Monsieur Henri-Maurice Perreault, it remains one of the
most beautiful garden cemeteries in the world, following in the tradition of
the famous French style. Located on the slopes of Mount Royal, the cemetery
covers a total expanse of more than 343 acres dotted by a number of
ornamental gardens and exotic trees including red oak, Siberian crab apple,
Scotch elm, black cherry, Colorado blue spruce, crimson king maple, Lombary
poplar and Norwegian maple. Known for its beautiful collection of flowers
planted throughout the grounds, many of the species found at the cemetery
are grown in the on-site greenhouses attached to the main administration
buildings.
