It was apparently my rather innocent request (see below) for the
names of likely churches and neighborhoods in Quebec to search for my
ca 1825-1850 Irish ancestors that has sparked a mighty discussion
about the French vs. English merits of a couple of sites. Thanks to
the person who made the two suggestions about the Notre Dames des
Neiges site (which I had no problem using, but found nothing) and the
Bishops University site, which I am still trying to navigate. I can't
seem to find any records online for BU. Are there any? But my two
other questions remained unanswered: Are/were there likely churches I
should check for that time period? Or are the RC records centrally
located these days, as is common in many dioceses? Was there only
one Irish neighborhood -- Griffintown? As always, thank you in
advance.

Some advice, please. I recently found out that my g-g-g-grandparents
and probably two of their children arrived in Quebec about 1825 from
Co. Waterford. John Ivory & Mary Lyons Ivory were the parents; Thomas
Ivory was an infant son and Bridget Ann Ivory was a toddler daughter,
probably less than 2 years in age. I know that when he was about 16,
Thomas traveled to France to learn the hotel/restaurant business.
When he returned in about 1850-1852, he returned to Brooklyn, NY, not
Quebec. In the early 1850s the rest of his family can also be found
in Brooklyn, but I don't know who went there first. The graves of all
of them except for the father John Ivory are located in Brooklyn.
John Ivory may have died in Canada or not. I don't know. So, my
questions are where would be the likeliest place to look for them in
Quebec records, either civil or Roman Catholic? Were there major
Irish churches in the second quarter of the 19th century? Were there
major Irish neighborhoods where these immigrants were more likely to
settle? If John Ivory did die in Quebec, is there a more likely
cemetery to research? I will be traveling to Montreal and Quebec in
July for about two weeks this summer. I would like to spend some of
that time finding whatever information I can about them. Thank you
for your help.
