Vern,
Having found one family in both the 1861 and the 1871 census, I can tell
you that the information, as well as the legibility, is much better in the
1871 census. I would start with that one if I were you.
If this person was alive in 1881 or 1901 (or 1911, but I doubt that one is
applicable), there are census records available online that might help.
