Obituary in the Montreal Gazette, December 10, 1923
SERVED UNDER NINE FEDERAL PREMIERS
Thomas N. Doody, 37 Years in Government Service, Died in California
Having entered the Civil Service of the Dominion of Canada in 1886, during
the second administration of Sir John Macdonald, and serving subsequently
under Sir John Abbott, Sir John Thompson, Sir Mackenzie Bowell, Sir Charles
Tupper, Bt., Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Sir Robert Borden, Rt. Hon. Arthur Meighen and
Rt. Hon. W. L. Mackenzie King, a term of 37 years service to Canada was ended
on Saturday, by the death at San Raphael, California, of Mr. Thomas Neill
Doody, chief clerk of the secretary's branch, Department of Public Works,
Ottawa.
Mr. Doody was born in Montreal in 1856, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Denis Doody, and a nephew of the late Mr. John O'Neill, of the Franciscan
Order, who died here recently. As one of the senior members of the Civil Service,
in point of service, he was well known in Ottawa. It was his particular
work to prepare the reports for his department, and also the replies and data
required from time to time in either House of Parliament, working with the
deputy minister, Mr. Hunter.
Ten days ago Mr. Doody had left for California in search of better health.
The change of climate apparently failed to ameliorate his condition and the
end came suddenly from heart failure while staying at the home of his
brother, M. C. Doody, San Raphael. Mr. Doody never married. Three brothers and a
sister survive: M.C. Doody, of San Raphael; D. Doody, of the Dominion
Express Company, Montreal, and P. F. Doody and Mrs. T. W. Maguire, of
Montreal. The remains will be brought here for interment.
