Hello, I'm new and researching the name of Gallagher.I have been unable to find him in the Ontario 1851 census (he may have been in the missing parts) , so I'm eliminating each James Gallagher born in 1838 Canada, in an effort to find him.
There is a James Gallagher , age 14, going to school in the College of Chambly (English speaking, Catholic), with a residence in Stanstead. The 1851 Stanstead census is missing, so does anyone have access to the 1861 census, so I could see who the parents are of this young man. He showed up in Peterborough, Ontario, about 1865. Before that there seems to be no account of him. Even the Peterborough Archives have an artical on him, starting with,.."It is a mystery where Mr Gallagher came from".
There is a family story that he was the "black sheep" of his family and sent to Ontario, (from a wealthy family of course). Who knows if there is any truth to the story??. Before anyone does any looking please e-mail me to see what I have, I don't want to waste anyone's time.
I haven't researched in Quebec before, are there any tips/ places to search?. I also don't speak/read french.
Thank You Susan G in Oregon USA
