Subject: CLARK Family from Rhode Island to NB in 1783

Dear Listers,

I am new to this mailing list so I thought I would give you some details of
my NB roots and my brick walls.

I am currently pursuing all avenues to obtain the necessary documentation to
prove my CLARK(E) Loyalist roots in New Brunswick.

The following is my lineage:

Jabez CLARK(E) born abt.Mar 19, 1769, Kingstown, Rhode Island came to NB
with his father after the Revolutionary War in 1783. Two GEDCOM sources
give the father's name as Thomas CLARK or Elisha CLARK. If his father were
Elisha, he was married to Desire GARDINER. I need to confirm who his father
was and his birthplace so I can confirm our Loyalist roots.

NOTE: The family name was spelled with and without an 'E' after their
arrival from Rhode Island, but seems to be consistently spelled CLARK once
they arrive in Ontario.

I have a mortgage paper for Jabez' purchase of land in Lot 'M' of Kimble
Manor in Hampstead, Queens County in May 28, 1795. I believe he married
Rebecca about 1800. Based on two other unconfirmed GEDCOM sources - one who
gives her maiden name as LAND, which does not seem to prove out, and the
other which gives her name as BURNEY, and I cannot find any reference to any
BURNEY families in NB after the Rev War. Jabez and Rebecca had at least 12
living children by 1814, most of whom were born in NB. They arrived in
Ontario in 1811 with 7 sons and 4 daughters. I have found 4 sons and one
daughter:

Elisha born April 9, 1802
Isaiah born Oct 14, 1805 died Glanford Twp, Wentworth Co., ONT on Jan. 27,
1880 ( he is my 2x great grandfather)
Joseph Bernie born abt 1808 He is the father of Maggie CLARK who was
immortalized in the poem, then the song, "When You and I were Young Maggie".
The mill referred to in the song is Joseph's mill in Binbrook Twp, Wentworth
Co.
William born abt 1810
Nancy Ann Clark Born 1814

Jabez applied for an Ontario Land Grant in 1824 as did his eldest son
Elisha. They were both granted about 200 acres in Glanford Twp., Wentworth
Co. I have found Jabez' farm, although there are no longer any relatives
living on it.

My 2X great grandfather Isaiah CLARK was also a farmer. He married Susan
KING ( date unknown) and they had about nine children. My great grandfather
was Charles King CLARK, their sixth child and third son. He worked for the
Grand Trunk Railway and married his sweetheart, Isabella CALLOWHILL, in
Caledonia in 1882.

I am hoping that someone on the list has connections into this branch of the
CLARK(E) family.

I look forward to hearing from someone who may have more information or
other sources for me to follow up.

Kindest regards,

Anne Clark-Stewart
