Subject: [STJOHN] Responses to Loch Lomond
Date: Wed, 27 Feb 2002 00:03:56 -0800

Dear List members,
Thanks to everyone who answered my request. Each one added a little more to the picture. As always, the response was amazing from these two lists! What I got from all the messages was a feeling of actually being there, made it all seem a little more real. I used the link Sharon (her family actually knew Mary/Maire Cox) sent and saw how close both lines that I'm researching are geographically. "geographic description of the area see: http://geonames.nrcan.gc.ca/english/cgndb.html This is an excellent site for locating areas from the past & the present."

I revisited the NB phone lists I'd copied a while ago and found about 15 in the Loch Lomond area. Suddenly there are some potential connections.

Anyway, I hope it's OK with everyone, I'm sharing the reponses I received in case they may help someone else. Also noted a lot of fellow nightowls out there!
Thanks again,
Margaret in Oregon

It has an NB Place Names Lookup and Loch Lomond is listed there as well.
Good luck, Marilyn

My maiden name was McCarthy and my aunt & uncle were neighbours of Maire Cox and her husband. This Cox family later ran a store in Lakewood. Loch Lomond is an area not far from the airport heading in the general direction of St. Martin's. Toner is also a common name from that area. For a geographic description of the area see:
http://geonames.nrcan.gc.ca/english/cgndb.html
As a kid, we summered on the Johnston Road in Loch Lomond on Treadwell Lake. This is an excellent site for locating areas from the past & the present.
Happy Hunting,
Sharon

Loch Lomond is outside Saint John. My great grandparents' home is exactly 1 mile from the S. John airport going towards Saint John. The next small place down the road is Silver Falls. The place up above Loch Lomond is Ben
Lomond. Their name was Moran (very Irish) and the place was settled by lots of Irish.

There is a little suburb just outside Saint John, NB called Loch Lomond. My late uncle and his wife (she still does) lived there and I also have a few cousins in that area. Patty

Loch Lomond is east of Saint John, New Brunswick, I think you could say the Saint John
airport is in the Loch Lomond area, the Loch is actually part of the Saint John drinking water
supply.
The Loch consists of 3 lakes, Loch Lomond, Second Lake, and Third Lake although they
are really all one lake from Ben Lomond to Loch Lomond to Upper Loch Lomond/Baxters Corner
to Primrose. Lat/Lon about 65.85/45.35
Cheers

Loch Lomond is a chain of lakes and the surrounding area east of the airport in Saint John. The area where Route 111 turns east towards St Martins just beyond the airport and meets with Route 820. I am including a map of the area. I hope you can open it.
Chris, former resident of the area

Yes there is a Loch Lomond and it is in New Brunswick but closer to Hampton and Sussex area which is west of Saint John.
In the early days families of these areas would intermingle.

Yes there is (or was at least) a place called Loch Lomond. I
interned in Saint John in 1956-57 and it was on the edge of the city then.
Probably now it is incorporated into the city proper by now.

Loch Lomond is east of Saint John in Simonds Parish (not to be confused with the Simonds in Carleton Co). I can't recall exactly, but it is close to city limits - either inside or outside the limits. The city boundary is quite far out & Loch Lomind is beyond the airport.
