This won't help with John, but Kings Birth records, has the birth of two of
his children.

Etta Oliva, born 20 June 1870 at Cornwallis.

Freedom Effie, born 23 February 1873.

Both births list their mother as Mary Olivia Powell, and says that John and
Mary were married 03 May 1854 in Cornwallis.

If the marriage date is correct, one would suspect that there would have
been a number of other children.
