Duncanson's book (p. 159) indicates the following:

"John, born 1847, m 19 Feb 1868 Alice Goudy B 1847 of Yarmouth, NS. 1871
Census Falmouth shows John Aker as a Farmer, Baptist, German Descent.

He was the son of Henry Aker, B 1798. Married 26 Jan 1837 Elizabeth
Houlton (Houghton). 1871 Census for Falmouth shows Henry Aker as a Methodist
of German descent; although it has not been possible to confirm the line of
descent it seems likely that Henry Aker would trace his ancestry from John
Adam Acker who settled in Lunenburg County as part of the Foreign Protestant
migration of 1752.

John had 2 brothers: Levi B 1837, and Samuel, B 1842

There's a bit more info in Duncanson's book, if this is the right person and
you wish more info.
