Son Sees Father Killed in Stellarton Mine Yard

Caught Beneath Engine
Five Minutes Before Shift Ends, David Conway Meets Death
Son is Witness

Well Known Stellarton Brakeman Victim in Allan Shaft Yard Accident

STELLARTON, May 26 - Slipping as he was about to step on the running board
of a shunting engine, David Conway, brakeman for the Acadia Coal Company
met almost instant death here this afternoon before the horrified eyes
of his son William, who watched the locomotive pass over the body of his
father, five minutes before the latter's day's work would have ended.

Slipped Under Wheels

Working at the Company's Allan Shaft weigh scales, Mr. Conway was shunting
cars when the tragedy happened. Two cars had been switched and Mr. Conway
gave the signal for the engine to move ahead after throwing the switch.
Realizing something was wrong the engineer stopped his engine and saw his
brakeman lying on the tracks fatally injured.

Witnessing the death of his father was a son William, a car checker at
the Stellarton station, who had driven down to the shaft to take his father
home. His father, after giving the signal, had slipped as he stepped on
the running board and the engine passed over him, severing one leg and
causing serious body injuries.

Death of the popular member of the Fuller Lodge No. 5, I.O.O.F., was a
distinct shock to the community where he was known as a great follower
of clean sport, especially the game of cricket, as he was a member of the
Stellarton Cricket Club for many years and a fast scorer at the bat.

He was 64 years old and over 50 years had been employed by the Coal Company.
He was sexton of the First Presbyterian Church, and a member of the many
different societies of the Church.

Besides a wife, he is survived by two sons, William and Levi, both of Stellarton,
and three sisters, Mrs. Frew, New Glasgow, Mrs. Ed. Mitchell, Stellarton,
and Mrs. Johnson of Westville. Funeral arrangements were not completed
tonight.
