Dear Michael,

Sue's answer was quite correct with regard to the origins of the
Houses of Refuge. These later became and still are, county-run homes
for the aged which should not be confused with the poor houses of the
earlier era. The House of Refuge eventually evolved into the original
Brucelea Haven Home For The Aged which was in recent years replaced
with a new facility. They have a website at:

http://brucecounty.on.ca/ssoc1.htm

Good Luck,

Cathy.
