I suspect you will find that this refers to Masson (or Buckingham) on the
Quebec side of the river.
I think that both of these communities may have become part of the new
amalgamated city of Gatineau.

The North Star Phosphate Mine operated on the east side of the river. It
took its ore to Buckingham and before the advent of the C.P.R., Railroad
branch to Buckingham, it loaded the ore on wagons and drew it to the"Basin
du Lievre". From there it was reloaded on barges or shipped by rail to its
destinayion. ln the wintertime, the ore was transported by sleigh from the
mines to the Basin and loaded on railway cars.

Each of the two sawmills in Buckingham, in the early days before 1906, had
a water slide
in which the sawn lumber - all White Pine - was carried in a 3' trough bu
water from the
sawmill to the piling grounds at the Basin (now Masson). From this piling
ground the
lumber was shipped, largely on scows which were towed down the Ottawa River to
Montreal, or farther to New York points.

Buckingham as a town owes its existence to the lumber industry practiced
extensively here since the beginning of the 19th century. The natural
beauty and the industrial potential of this region was a factor in
attracting pioneers to settle their businesses here.
The population of the town is about 3,500 which includes the basin of the
river "Lièvre" being a portion of the town at the C.P.R. station.
