Hello Joan
You are the first reply. There seems to have been a "holdup" of messages
on this list, as my copy of my inquiry to this list only came through
today. I'm glad to discuss this file with you some more.
If you have experience copying files at the archives, do you have an idea
of what you are likely to charge?
The Archives informed me that they would copy up to 250 pages at a time,
but with no paper count of the complete file.
An "informed" lister suggested that a murder trial file of that period
would not probably be over 250 pages. I feel I would be "gambling" to just
order up 250 pages to be copied by the archives, so I'd rather have someone
there to check the file for me. Perhaps if you are at the archives for
other purposes, you could order up the file and then have an idea of what
is involved? I've no experience with this.
I can scan you the National Archives letter if that is helpful (I found it
a tad confusing!)
The file is found on the NA Index as: Cook Teets (the convicted
murderer)Department of Justice, RG 13, B1, Volume 1420, File 187A.
I quote from the NA letter "The following is a list of the type of
documents that you can expect to locate within the file: correspondence,
petitions, order-in-council, transcript of evidence, newspaper clippings
and coroner's inquest." I suppose that the file may only contain some of
these articles.
All of these items would be of interest, and in particular the coroner's
inquest (of the murder victim - there was also a coroner's inquest after
the hanging - normal procedure I think) and of most interest the
transcript of evidence. If the file is extremely large, then I would need
to determine how much of the file I could afford to copy.
Thanks for your response and I look forward to hearing from you.
(the murder victim is my gg aunt -- I have reason to believe the convicted
husband is not the murderer and that the actual murderer is the aunt's
mother - my gg grandmother!)
