OK .. reference to RACHEL DOWNEY in Carleton County struck a chord with me
as I checked my tree and found a RACHEL Downey married to a JOHN HOWARD, in
Renfrew County (no dates or other info for either as parents of ETHEL MAY
HOWARD (b 1884), ERMA ELIZABETH HOWARD (1887) and HENRY THOMAS HOWARD
(1896), all born in Westmeath Twp, Renfrew County. Both girls married
Dobsons, but Henry Thomas married ANNA LEE NEIL, gr daughter of FRANCIS NEIL
(b 1820) and ELIZABETH OWENS (1824), who emigrated to Fitzroy Twp in 1836
and 1824.
The similarity in names is giving me the hook to ask if anyone on this list
has information about:
1. Descendents of Francis and Elizabeth Neil or their siblings. Francis
and Elizabeth had 3 children in Fitzroy - DANIEL, EliZABETH and MARY, born
in 1847, 1849 and 18953 (Pakenham) respectively, before they moved to ROSS
Township, in Renfrew County. My 2nd gr grandmother, FRANCES NEIL was born
in 1854 in Ross.
2. HENRY HOWARD Jr b 1841 in CDA WEST, according to the 1851 census for
Westmeath Twp, Renfrew County. Henry's parents were HENRY (b 1804)and ELiZA
(b 1811 but reported as being 110 at her death in Snake River, Westmeath, in
1910). They had 9 other children:
Robert (Ireland, 1834) m Mary Coburn
Mary (1836)
Sarah (1844) m William Rollins
George (1846), m Jemima Bromley
Elizabeth (1847), m Thomas Brown
Charlotte (1849)
Jane (1849), m. Hamilton Brown.
My problem is that I cannot find any reference to the marriage of HENRY and
FRANcES NEIL, in 1870-71, before their first child, ELiZABETH was born in
1872. Or Henry's death, apparently between 1891 and 1901. I do find them as
married in the 1871 census in Ross, aged 30 and 19. Can anyone help with
this?
In addition I would like to hear from anyone researching this Howard family.
I am also not sure how the Henry Thomas Howard, son of John Howard and
Rachel Downey, fits into the Howard family.
Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide.
Cheryl, in Douglas, Ontario

Good afternoon:
I am interested in finding descendants of Rachel Downey, daughter of James
and Ann Downey and Samuel Crosier/Crozier, son of George and Kezia Crozier.
Rachel was born about 1866 probably in Carleton County. Samuel was born
about 1865 in Canada. They were married Feb 1886 in Carleton County. After
their marriage I can not find them in the census records.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Janet

Perhaps you can't find Rachel and Samuel on any census because Rachel died
shortly after they were married and I have copied Samuel's second marriage
information below.
Both the Downeys and the Croziers were actually from Ramsay Township, Lanark
County in the area of Carleton Place and George & Keziah are buried in St.
james Anglican Cemetery in Carleton Place along with a few other Croziers.
I can't find a burial place yet for the Downeys or specifically Rachel but
I'll keep looking.
This might help put you on a different track now depending on what line of
this family you are most interested in.
6598-89 Samuel CROZIER, 24, widower, laborer, North Augusta, Carleton Place,
s/o George & Keziah, married Lucy Lavinia NEILL, 17, Carleton Place, same,
d/o Michael & Margaret, witn: Joseph EDWARDS & Thomas NEILL of Carleton
Place and Annie LOW of Almonte, 15 Oct 1889 at St. Pauls Church, Almonte
Let me know if any of this makes any sense to you.
Leigh in Ottawa.
P.S. Where do you live????

Leigh:
Thank you for the information. I am related to the Downey side. I was afraid
that Rachel had died and that was why I was having trouble. James, Rachel's
father, was a brother to my ancestor, Andrew Downey. I have cc'd another
relative, she is a descendant to another brother of James and Andrew.
James and Andrew originally lived on Lot 22 concession 4 in Huntley
township, Carleton County. They were the sons of Andrew Downey and I believe
Eliza Monaghan. Both Eliza and Andrew are buried in Christ Church cemetery
near Carp. They are buried with 2 other daughters of James and Ann. Briefly
my lineage is as follows:
Andrew and Eliza
Andrew (brother to James) and Ann
George Andrew and Jemima
Irwin and Maria
Irene and Harold
Me, Janet
James and Ann's children all died without having children. Only 3 of the 6
married but I think they all died fairly soon after their marriage. The
other 3 children died in their teens or before. James and Ann are buried in
St. Fillian's cemetery in Beckwith Township with their children, Andrew and
Eliza. I do not know where their 6th child, a daughter who died in infancy
is buried. At least I found her on one census only.
Do you know when Rachel died? I have not been able to find her death
certificate.
I have more information on the Downey line if you are interested.
I live in St. Albert, Alberta.
Andrew and Ann moved to Manitoba in 1880 and that is where I grew up.
Thanks again for the information. It is most helpful.
Janet
