Subject: [KENT] Peter St. Aubin dit Delisle--Raleigh township, Kent County 1861

Hello,
I am new to the list and hope that you might be able to offer me a
suggestion or two.
My second great grandfather was Peter St. Aubin. He was born 1823 Kent
county, St. Pierre on the Thames. He was married 1848 at St. Pierre's to
Sarah Hock (Hawk, Hok, Ocre, Auber), the parish record states that he was
born and resided Belle River a the time of his marriage. In 1851 Peter and
Sarah resided at Belle River, Rochester tonwship, Essex county, Peter was a
farmer. In the 1861 census, Raleigh township, Kent county, Peter is listed
with his family. In this census there is a column that indicates whether the
person was "colored, Mulatto, or indian". For Peter this column is marked
indian.
Peter was the son of Pierre St. Aubin and Francoise Delisle. I have been
unable to locate a marriage for Pierre, senior and Francoise. In the 1861
census, Peter St. Aubin, junior is actually listed as Peter Delisle, using
his mothers maiden name. Family folklore had spoken of the mother of Pierre,
senior having a full blood indian mother. Until finding this census showing
Peter, junior as indian I had never had reason to pursue this.
My question is, does anyone have any advise as to where I would look for
such lineage? Indications are that Peter, junior was born in Essex county and
I will post to that list also, but since he lived in Raleigh I thought I
would post here also. What tribal records should I seek to research? Anything
that you might offer would be much appreciated!
Sincerely,
Tom St. Aubin
