Hello Merideth

With reference to the McGowans - a Patrick McGowan was given 100 acres of
land in Lanark County, Bathurst Township, Concession 8, lot 7SW, in Aug. of
1820.

My source for this tidbit of info is "Transactions of Land Grants"
transcribed by Christine Meinert Spencer - which I had found on Keith
Thompson's website. You can view the document here:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~onlanark/Land_Property/landgrt7.htm

It's a huge document so you'll probably want to user the find command on
your brower. Type in McGowen...it is spelled with an e in this case.

But lots more info can be found on McGowan's if you go to this site:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~onlanark/

Scroll down to the bottom where you will see a search engine and type in
McGowan - lots and lots of hits - you will even see the Land Grants document
listed again.

I thought I had this info in one of the several text books I have on the
area. But no, I had printed the 'Transactions of Land Grants' off from the
website, and that was what was sticking in the back of my mind.
This website has a wealth of information and you will probably spend alot of
time clicking on the different links.

There is a McGowan Lake in the vicinity of Concession 8. It's so small (you
can see from one end to the other) I can't find it on any map, but you will
probably find reference to it on the website. Today McGowan Lake Campground
is operating on the lake. I don't know who the current owners are.

Let me know if you have further questions once you have visited the sites
above.

Bye for now....
