Hi Meredith,
I believe I corresponded with you a couple of years ago, I just can't find the emails due to an Outlook problem???
Mary McGowan Clarke O'Brien 1802-1905 is my grt-grt-grt-grandmother and her parents were Hugh McGowan & Margaret Fair. Phillip McGowan was married to Mary Armstrong and Bernard was married to Margaret McErow. Mary had two children Thomas & Margaret who married Roseann Hughes 1858 & James Hughes 1856 (my line) children of Owen Hughes & Rose Flood. After Hugh Clarke's death in 1832-4 Mary remarried to 18 year old Thomas O'Brien in 1834 and they had 6 children.
Here's some of what I've collected from books:
1. Rev. John MacDonald of St. John's Perth notebook from microfilm extractions by Duncan MacDonald, Brockville (see book with orange cover pg 41) Bathurst, January 12, 1836 - Bathurst Twp. Lot 24, 1st Concession - McGowan, widow, McGowan, Bridget 10 yr, McGowan, Susan 8, McGowan, Barnard 12, McGowan, William 6. (see book green cover - Index) Patt. 15 - 19, Phillip 10 -17, Hugh 17 - 20, Widow of Barney 17), Patt McGown Bathurst C8 L7; Phillip: Perth-1835-Nov-23 29-10/ cash from Phillip McGown, 1-Bathurst. "This will be for last year I suppose said he."
2. NB in Land Records Index found: Patrick McGowan, Bathurst, SW1/2 7 C8, 1825 11 05 RG1 C13 Vol 96 pg 70; Phillip McGowan, Bathurst, L24 C1 1846 03 12 RG1 C1113 Vol 2 pg 126. Page 17: 1 - Bathurst, Lot 3 James Gorman, Lot 21 Hugh McGown (added: now in Bedford). Lot 24 widow of Barney McGowan. Phillip McGowan
3. McGown/McGowan not found in: Lanark Co. 1820 location report; Early settlers 1820 - 1822; Co. Marshall's 1834 report (not sure why???); 1842 Census records for Lanark Co. (not sure why???)
4. http://users.rootsweb.com/~ongenpro/census/transcripts/Lanark-PerthMilitaryDepot-1822.html
1822 Perth Military Depot, Lanark County Census
22 Bernard McGowan Emigrant S. Sherbrook, C7, NE 1/2 Lot 21 Located Nov. 9, 1822, 100 acres
22 Phillip McGowan Emigrant S. Sherbrook, C7, SW 1/2 Lot 21 Located Nov. 9, 1822, 100 acres
23 Hugh McGowan Emigrant S. Sherbrook, C7, NE 1/2 Lot 19 Located Dec. 9, 1822, 100 acres
Can't find the source right now but Bernard McGowan seems to be from Co. Fermanagh and Hugh McGowan from Co. Tyrone. Phillip was from Co. Tyrone. Somewhere in my notes it mentions that Bernard was a cousin of Phillip's.
I also have Patrick McGowen [sic?], emigrant, Bathurst, C8, SW 1/2 Lot 7, located Aug. 15, 1820, 100 acres, no remarks.
If I haven't already, I can send you all the notes I have, you'll just have to plod through them as I haven't entered them all in my genealogy software.
Hope this helps,
Elaine

Hi Karen,
I'm still anxious to find out what you can tell me about the McGowan's in Lanark County. What book is it that you were referring to ?
The McGowan's that I'm looking for lived in South Sherbrook, Bathurst and Drummond townships as well as the town of Perth. I'm not quite sure which township McGowan Lake is in. If you can tell me that as well, I'd be very appreciative,
Meredith McDonald

I wonder if your McGowan's are the one's that McGowan Lake is on???. I'm at work right now, and have another commitment this evening but I'll check the name out as soon as I get home tomorrow night.

Hi Merideth,
No reference to McGowan in Ottawa Past and Present but I think there is a
book that focuses more on Lanark. If Karen Prytula is listening... she can
probably help you!
