Obituaries from the Toronto Star - 1919
>Mrs. E. Greensides
>Following an attack of diabetes and many years of poor health, Mrs. Eliza
Greensides, wife of William Greensides, died on Monday, July 7th, 1919 at
2:30 p.m. in her eightieth year. The funeral will take place from her late
residence, 92 Greenwood avenue, on Wednesday, July 9th. Interment at Mount
Pleasant Cemetery.
>Mrs. Greensides was born in Shropshire, England, on Feb. 15th, 1840. When
four years old, her people brought her out to America. They left England in
a sailing vessel, when out on the ocean a week they encountered rough
weather; after being in this for some time they gave up hopes of ever
reaching land. The captain reported that the gale had blown them back one
hundred miles. After thirteen weeks of sailing they landed at New York,
where they lived for nine years before coming to this country. In 1853 they
started a brick manufacturing concern north of Davenport road off Yonge
street. When Mrs. Greensides got married her husband carried on her
father's business until he died on October 17th, 1913. A staunch Methodist,
Mrs. Greensides was a member of the Zion Church on St. Clair ave., for a
number of years. Three sons and two daughters survive.

>The death occurred in London on June 21st, of Mrs. (Dr.) MacLaren. The
late Mrs. MacLaren was the third daughter of the late G. W. Girdlestone,
K.C., of Kelling Hall, Norfolk, England, and is survived by her husband, Dr.
Alexander MacLaren, two daughters, Mrs. Walter Hungerford, and Mrs. James
Murton, both of London, and two sons, Major G.P. MacLaren, District Engineer
Canadian National Railways, this city, and Mr. R.A.S. MacLaren, manager of
the Bank of Montreal, Reston, Manitoba.

>Death removed one of Toronto's oldest citizens yesterday in the person of
John Russell, 278 Crawford street, in his eighty-ninth year. Born in
Scotland, the late Mr. Russell came to Canada with his parents when he was
six years of age, and was brought up on a farm at Carluks, Wentworth County.
He began his business career in a wholesale house at Hamilton, but in 1896
he moved to Toronto, where he has lived ever since, and where he was a
jobber in the paper business.
>It was only last year that the late Mr. Russell and his aged wife, who is
now in her eighty-second year, celebrated their diamond wedding. Besides
his wife, one son and three daughters survive. Mr. J.W. Russell of the
Massey-Harris Company; Mrs. A.G. Hewish of Hamilton........... (The rest was

arrival of G.T.R. train leaving Toronto at 12:15 noon.
