Item Description:
The Orange and Black: documents in the history of the Orange Order, Ontario, and the West, 1890-1940" by
Pennefather, 187 pages, published in 1984. It is a concise book on the history of Canadian Orangeism and its Irish roots.
Reviews are given below.
THE ORANGE AND BLACK
An excellent book on the Orange Order in Canada (R.S.
Pennefather's "The Orange and the Black: Documents in The History of the Orange Order, Ontario and The West,
1890-1940" ' published in 1984) is still available. This book, written rather dispassionately would be excellent reading for
any Orange history buff. The author is not an Orangeman, or even a Protestant, but he has amassed many first hand
documents in his work. I highly recommend the chapters dealing with the old relationship between the Order and the
Canadian Conservative Party. It would be a perfect addition for any lodge library. *************************
Review 2
The Orange and Black Documents In The History of the Orange Order Ontario and The West 1890-1940
During the last twenty years the work of antiquarians, genealogists, and local historians in various stages between amateur
and professional rank has added a dimension to Canadian history. As a result, a vast amount of new information has been
uncovered, which is now being digested by professional historians. In this respect, Robert Pennefather has offered us a
feast. The documents he presents in The Orange and the Black the are well chosen and admirably placed in context by an
introduction in which he demonstrates a thorough knowledge of his subject. The popular character of Orangeism is now
generally recognized, but many questions concerning the working of Orangeism remain obscure. What, for example, was
the relationship between influential members of the organization and the Orange rank and file? To what extent was
membership of influential members kept secret? How did patronage work in the interest of lesser Orangemen? These and
many other questions are answered in this selection of documents. They should make fascinating reading for all those who
are interested in 20th-Century Canadian history, and are of special interest to those doing research in the field. Those who
delve into this volume will undoubtedly find their time well spent. Hereward Senior, McGill University (author of the
academic study entitled "Orangeism in Ireland and Britain") The story of The Orange Order 1890-1940 is also the story of
Catholic-Protestant conflict in that period. A book principally of documents allows the reader to form his or her own
conclusions. RS Pennefather, author ****
