Subject: [CAN-ORANGE] Orange / Black Records - Manitoba Archives
Below is a list of updated Orange Lodge and Black records held by Manitoba Archives recently received from Ian Smythe, Orange Lodge Archivist for Western Canada:
LOYAL ORANGE ASSOCIATION fonds
1906 - 1996.
35 cm textual and printed records
4 photographs
Administrative History:
The Loyal Orange Association is a national fraternal organization that strives to perpetuate the memory of William of Orange, as well as sponsor and support charities. It was founded in Ireland in 1795 to commemorate the victory of William of Orange at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The Grand Lodge of British North America was founded in 1830. The Most Worshipful Grand Orange Lodge of Canada is the corporate authority which binds together all provincial jurisdictions.
The first formal Orange lodge on the Prairies, in what was to become The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Orange Lodge of Manitoba, was instituted by some of the officers and men of the 1st Ontario Rifles, under the command of Colonel Wolseley in 1870. The meeting was held on a boat as the men could not procure a room in which to perform the instituting ceremonies. By 1872 membership had increased to 260 members, and the Lodge was thought to be the largest lodge in Canada. The lodges reached their peak of importance politically and socially from about 1880 to 1920. With the changes in Canadian society, the Order declined in popularity. By mid-century, falling membership, an inability to attract young recruits, a diminishing number of lodges, lack of funds to maintain existing structures, and weakened representation in politics were illustrative of the decline. The Sash Canada Wore: A Historical Geography of the Orange Order in Canada, by Cecil J. Houston and William J.
Smyth provides historical information on the Orange Order in Canada.
Custodial History:
No accession records exist for the minute books of the lodges in this fonds, but they are believed to have been donated by Mr. Norman Matheson and Mr. Lorne Tummon of Winnipeg in the 1980s. Mr. Ian Smythe, Edmonton, presented printed directories, reports, and ritual manuals in 2002, the circular to all Primary and County Lodges, 1933, in 2005, and additional journals and proceedings, rules and regulations, miscellaneous items and the photographs in 2006. The Archives contacted the Canadian Headquarters of the Grand Orange Lodge of Canada and received permission in 2003 to acquire, have title, and to make the records available for research use with no restriction on access, copying or publication.
Scope and Content:
The fonds consists of a membership and visitor register for the Ulster Volunteer LOL #2569, 1940-58; miscellaneous membership and transfer certificates , 1910 - 1949; minute books for the Winnipeg Royal Black Preceptory, 1906-14 and 1926-37; the Transcona LOL #3220 for 1953-60 and the Scott Memorial LOL #1795 for 1950-51; circular notice to Primary and County Lodges, 1933; constitution and laws of the Grand Orange Lodge of British America, 1953; reports of the Grand Orange Lodge of British America, 1948, 1959-1965,1967, 1969; reports of the Grand Orange Lodge of Canada 1972-1978, 1981-1986, 1996; journals and proceedings of the Provincial Grand Orange Lodge of Manitoba, 1930-1933, 1973-75, 1977-80; directory of the Grand Orange Lodge, County of Winnipeg, 1939; report of the Ladies Benevolent Association, Grand Lodge of Manitoba, 1984; a book of forms to be used in all Lodges of the Loyal Orange Association of British America, published in Toronto, 1958, rules and
