Hi there Betty,

What is said in the book about the Sherritts who arrived about 1827. We
know Rachel the mother, sons George and ? and daughter Rebecca were in the
Lakefield area from that time. Also were there any Arnolds there - they were
cousins of the Sherritts. We know one, named George was around at some
point, and many others settled in the Renfrew valley norht of Argneteul.
They all came from Carrigallen Parish in County Leitrim and from the nearby
townof Cavan which is in nortern Ireland.

Also does anyone know anything about the Orange order's activities in
Argenteul in the nineteenth century. I believe they were active in the 1837
Rebellion. George Sherritt was supposedly a Captain in the Militia and we
know there was a lot of protestant bigotry in the Irish settlers, but are
there any records of such groups?

Thanks in advance for your offer and assistance, Geoff.

Hello,

I finally decided to try out an "inter-Library Loan" and requested a copy of
the "History of Argenteuil ..." It came into my local Library yesterday
morning, and I picked it up. I am offering to do look-ups in the book,
but will only respond with whatever I can type into an e-mail !

I can only have the book for one week, so requests can only be made during
the next few days.

... The Index does have a list of "surnames" mentioned, as well as "topics."
Here is a paragraph on my ancestor, William HENDERSON (wife: Mary KERR):

p.432
"William Henderson came from the parish and county of Sligo, and settled
here in 1824, in the 2nd Range, very soon after the arrival of Robert
McMahon. He lived here until his death, 20th August, 1870. He had
fourteen children, eight sons and six daughters, all of whom save one son
lived till maturity. Samuel, the eldest one, now living, was married 26th
March, 1837, to Hannah Hunter; they had three sons and three daughters who
grew up. William, one of the sons, and the only one now living, has been
connected with the Methodist Church as a clergyman for thirty years, and is
now stationed at Danville, Que. About a year after the death of his first
wife, Mr. Henderson married Mary Ann, daughter of the late Capt. Johnstone.
By this marriage he has had ten children, of whom nine -- two sons and seven
daughters -- are now living. John, one of the former, has been a minister
of the Methodist Church fifteen years, and is now stationed at South Woods,
Lake Ontario. His twin brother, who was a fireman on a railway train, was
killed in California in a wreck caused by train robbers. Another son
of Mr. Henderson, who had charge of a gang of thirty men in a quarry in New
Hampshire, was killed by the premature explosion of a blast. Mr. and Mrs.
Henderson are still living, and though aged, are active in mind and body,
and are much respected for their good words and works; he was one of the
loyal actors in the Rebellion of 1837."

One note regarding this .. is that this year several of us paid a "research
fee" to the County Sligo Research and Heritage Centre, and the researchers
there were not able to find records for our KERR and HENDERSON ancestors ..
for the Town of Sligo. They were not able to search for records in other
parts of the County. But, I have been told by people on the IRL / SLIGO
List .. that there were KERR's in the Calry Parish (as well as others on
the outskirts of the County).

So, this is an on-going project --- to find out where, exactly, our "family
group" of KERR's and HENDERSON's were born and raised - assumedly in County
Sligo, Ireland ! They were born in the 1785 to 1805 timeframe, and
arrived during the 1820's .. settling initially in the "former Township of
Gore." (See our many postings in the Archives of the List.)

Regarding these two surnames, these are the only other names mentioned in
the Index: Rev. Archibald Henderson, James Henderson, and John
Henderson, and Dawson Kerr and Andrew Kerr.

In regards to Dawson KERR, this seems to be a much later Dawson KERR than
we know about. This Dawson KERR was an owner/editor of a newspaper in
the 1870's ! If I can remember the information correctly, there was
a Dawson KERR who came to "the township of Gore" several years after the
initial "family group" came there, but, after a few more years, he moved,
again, to Perth, ?? Ontario. Because he arrived in "that" town, I
always "assumed" that he was related to: Patrick and Elizabeth (KERR?)
KERR and Mrs. Mary (KERR) HENDERSON and/or John and Ann (HENDERSON) KERR,
and Miss Elizabeth KERR, who married Levi MILLER there ! And, I know
that one of the KERR's there had a son, Dawson KERR, but I don't know that
information off the top of my head.

(A reminder is that most of the information I know has been posted to this
List going back a couple of years.)

The James HENDERSON, mentioned in the Index, is evidently not directly
related to our HENDERSON's .. and seems to have arrived in Argenteuil
before they did. His paragraph starts out:

"James Henderson, a venerable old gentleman, with kind and pleasant face,
who lives in a neat cottage near McGibbon's Mill, has many recollections of
the infant days of Lachute. He came with his father, Peter Henderson,
from Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, in 1820; his father settled on a lot
in St. Canute in the county of Two Mountains ......."

The official name of this book is: "History of the Counties, Argenteuil,
Quebec, Prescott, Ontario," by C. Thomas. Mika Publishing Company,
Ontario, 1981. -- Originally published in Montreal, 1896, by John Lovell
& Son.
(So, the above references to people still being alive are in reference to
the 1890's !)

Enjoy your Sunday !
