Subject: Gauley Surname in Province of Quebec and Others
Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2000 15:06:07 EST

Hello Canada,
I am researching the surname GAULEY, which is in every province of the
country. My great-grandmother was Mary GAULEY, who married Robert
SHANNON,Jr., about 1875, in or around the Grenville, Lachute, Arundel area of
Quebec, Canada. Some names of the men in the pioneer family were Thomas
Gauley, William Gauley and of course Eliza Gauley. The information I have
shows the matriarch of the clan was ELIZA GAULEY. From a brief outline
written in 1962 by ALICE GAULEY-NICHOLSON, Eliza Gauley's children were:
Elizabeth Gauley; mother of Alice Gauley Nicholson.
Sarah Gauley; Kenneth Ault's mother.
Mary Gauley; Wilfred and Lenore Shannon's mother and my great-grandmother.
James Gauley
George Gauley
David Gauley.
Taking from a letter I have, the Gauley family in Canada was begun by the
Gauley brothers who emigrated to Canada from Ireland around 1835. There were
possibly three of them. An unidentified brother returned to Ireland. The rest
of the family settled in the Grenville, Lachute and Arundel areas of Quebec,
but as the family grew, they spread out across the country. The letter I
have, written in December 1962, was given the return address of "710 Smyth
Road "Elmville Acres", Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Alice Gauley Nicholson says she was married around 1951 to a military man
by the name of Mr. J.D. "Nick" Nicholson, who in 1962 was 17 months from
completing his military service time and he planned on a career as a
bookkeeper. This was Alice's second marriage.
She refers to her son Captain Davison Curling, an Army man who on
December 11, 1962, took his wife Lois and their two daughters, to Germany on
a three year assignment.
Alice's mother Elizabeth Gauley passed away in 1945. My great-grandmother
Gauley-Shannon, passed away in 1912 in Michigan USA. Alice may have had a
brother named Harry.
The letter refers to "Kenneth and Elsie" whom I'm assuming are the
Ault's; and an "Aunt Bertha."
The name "Harry Davison" is there, probably related to Alice's first
husband. He may have been a pharmacist. "Nick " had other brothers who
apparently were in the Navy.
If anyone recognizes these names or circumstances, please let me know.
I'll gladly share any family information I have.

Sincerely,
Kevin O'Brien
