Obituaries (03/04/03)
CLEVELAND Courtney Ernest, called home to his Lord suddenly but peacefully
on March 1, 2003. Predeceased by his loving daughter Cathy, granddaughter
Linley and brothers Ernest and Howard. Courtney is survived by his beloved
wife Edith, son Cam (Nancy), sister Hester Dunlop (Larry), grandchildren
Nikki, Richard and Laura, great-grandchildren Bree and Bodie and son-in-law
Jake. Courtney was born in Vancouver on February 22, 1910, and he and his
family moved to Victoria where he graduated from Oak Bay High School. His
father Ernest Cleveland (who later became Commissioner of the Greater
Vancouver Water Board) and family returned to Vancouver and Courtney
received a degree in Geological Engineering at UBC. He completed his
education by obtaining a Ph.D in Economic Geology from McGill University. He
was first employed with the Bralorne Mining Company, spending a brief period
in Northern Ontario and then on to Takla Mercury mines in Northern BC in
support of the war effort. There, he was geologist and later, mine manager.
In 1945 he returned to Vancouver to work for the Bralorne mine. In 1949,
Courtney and Edith moved to Calgary and he became a geologist with Seaboard
Oil, later becomingPacific Petroleum Ltd. From 1952 to 1972, Courtney served
as senior geologist, chief geologist and manager of mining exploration for
Pacific. He was very closely associated with the exploration and development
of the large gas fields in the Peace River/Fort St. John area of BC. In 1964
Courtney's recommendations and efforts caused Pacific Petroleum to enter
into the area of mineral exploration, one of the first oil and gas companies
to do so. After retirement in 1972, he and Edith moved to their favourite
summer spot, Naramatta, BC. Many memorable years were spent there until they
moved to Victoria in 1989. "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He
restores my soul." A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church,
877 North Park Street, on Thursday, March 6 at 2:00 P.M. with a reception to
follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Courtney's memory may be made to
the C.N.I.B.
