Basford, Stanley Ronald
BASFORD _ Hon. Stanley Ronald, P.C.,Q.C. Died suddenly at his home in Sechelt, B.C. January 30. He was predeceased by his father Douglas, mother Betty and brother Bromley. He is survived by his children Daniel and Megan and their mother Madeleine Nelson; sisters Phyllis Basford, Vivian O'Grady and Sonia Anderson; nieces and nephews John (Heather), Michael (Frances), Sally (Adrian), Sandie (Greg), Nancy, Marnie (Barry), Bromley (Darlene), and Kate (Pete). Born in Fort Garry, Manitoba, April 22, 1932, raised in Winnipeg and Comox, B.C., he graduated in law from UBC in 1956. Although he practiced law for several years, politics was his passion. In 1963 he was elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament in Vancouver Center, and re-elected in the next four elections. He became Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs in Pierre Trudeau's government in 1968 and subsequently served as Minister of State for Urban Affairs, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of Justice and Attorn!
ey General for Canada. He was responsible for the passage of much progressive policy and legislation and worked tirelessly to the benefit of his constituents, his city and Canada. His most memorable local legacy was the realization of his vision for Granville Island. Of national importance was Canada's first Human Rights Act, developed and shepherded through the House of Commons by Mr. Basford. It was a particularly proud moment for him when, as an outgrowth of that legislation, Canada adopted its Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He left politics in 1978 and returned to the practice of law in Vancouver until he retired in 1989. During that period he also served as the Coordinator of the massive North-East Coal project and held several directorships. As a private citizen he served numerous community organizations, traveled, gardened, and appreciated the peace and solitude of his waterfront home. At his 65th birthday celebration he said, "I chose a life of public service and th!
e Liberal Party to help give a voice to those without a voice."
