MADSEN, Ben October 23, 1932 May 27, 2007 Born in Strandby, Denmark, Ben
came to Canada in July of 1951 at the age of 19 and worked on the many ships
of the Union Steamship Company of B.C. from 1952 until 1958. He married
Kathy on September 14, 1956 who passed away in August of 2004. Ben started
B. Madsen Motors in 1967. Always the entrepreneur and shrewd businessman he
had many friends and colleagues in the car business. Ben seemed to have
mellowed with age and although in his younger years he had a prickly side,
the authentic Ben was always very loyal to his family and friends, always
hard working and could always be counted on when challenges arose. There
wasn't anything subtle about Ben, but that was his charm and that's what
made him so likable by all who knew him. Ben married Fran Galbraith (passed
away December 2005) on July 22, 1995 and began a new chapter in his life.
Anyone who knew Ben knew that his passion was playing golf. Ben, a member of
the Royal Colwood Golf and Country Club for more than 30 years never missed
an opportunity to play a round followed by a good card game in the 19th
hole. Some would say that the RCGC was his second home and it was easy to
see his pride in being a member of the club. Upon having a debilitating
stroke in 2005, his home became the Priory with his room overlooking the
first tee of his golf course. Ben is survived by his brothers, his children
and their spouses, David Madsen (Dianna) and Karolyn Aikin (Tim), Fran's
children Marilyn Niergarth (Bob), Bruce Galbraith and Doug Galbraith (Jana),
grandchildren Timothy and Kayla Aikin, Elia Galbraith and Lauren Madsen and
numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, Australia and Denmark. He was also
looking forward to welcoming a fifth grandchild in November (Madsen). We
would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to the staff of the
Priory, the Memorial Pavilion at Jubilee Hospital and to Dr. Keeler for
their care and compassion in helping dad in his last years. As per Ben's
request there will be no service but would ask that you remember him and
raise a glass a time. Ben will most certainly be missed. 374236

TODD, John (Jack) Hebden September 7th, 1916 May 28th, 2007 Well known
sportsman and lifetime resident of Victoria passed away May 28th after
complications with Parkinson's. He was predeceased by parents Ernest and
Ethel Todd and sister Marjorie Todd Herman. He is lovingly remembered and
will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years, Margaret, his sons, John
(Anita), Rick (Donna), David (Sonia), and his 6 grandchildren and 5 great
grandchildren. He had a great love of all things outdoors, especially
gardening and bird life, and also hunting, fishing, hiking, and mountain
climbing. At age 82 Jack climbed his last mountain, the "Merry Widow". His
garden became internationally known and was often opened for garden tours.
He was a Life Member of the Vancouver Rock and Alpine Society. He attended
Oak Bay High School and Brentwood College and began business life in the
Canadian Bank of Commerce, spent a brief time in Real Estate, followed by
service in the Army. He was manager of Western Fish Co., a division of J. H.
Todd & Son, Horseshoe Brand Salmon, the business started by his great
grandfather, Jacob Hunter Todd. He was a Life Member of the "Y", and for
many years, along with the late Archie McKinnon, taught swimming to
countless youngsters. For over 40 years, first at the Crystal Gardens and
then the "Y", he provided a weekly swim program for the Visually Impaired.
In the 1950's he was active in assisting Marilyn Bell and Cliff Lumsdon in
their swims across the Straits of Juan de Fuca, also Florence Chadwick in
her attempt at the swim. For over 20 years he was the principal owner of
Sidney Island operating a sheep farm, and spent years of happy times there
with family and friends. During this era he obtained his private pilot's
license and was a member of the Victoria Flying Club. He was a Life Member
of the Victoria Golf Club, and during his 78 years of Active Membership was
always interested in the Club's development, donating many of the trees
lining the fairways today. In 1958 he received the Centennial Medal for
outstanding Community service, and in 1998 was named Honorary Citizen of the
City of Victoria. In 1999, for his work with the Visually Impaired and
Community Service, he was awarded the Order of Canada. Jack felt his life
was directed by the following verse "Kindness", given by his grandmother,
Louisa Todd, "I shall pass this way but once, any good thing therefore that
I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it
now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass along this way
again." We wish to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the nurses
and staff on 2 West, Royal Jubilee Hospital, for the kindness and caring
extended to Jack and his family. A Celebration of Life will be held at the
Victoria Golf Club, Friday, June 8th, 3pm to 5 pm. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to Victoria YMCA, Victoria CNIB, or charity of choice.
