BACON, Frances Mary In the early evening of June 12, 2007 with a close
friend by her side, Fran (Frankie) passed away. Survived by her loving
daughter Christina (Wayne) Boomer, son Kevin (Cheri) Crighton, brother
Richard Gray and sister Barbara Toth. She was a fun loving Nana who will be
sadly missed by all of her grandchildren. Fran will be forever remembered
for her enthusiastic and outgoing personality that touched everyone who knew
her. A special thank you to the staff at Heritage Woods for everything they
did for Mom. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Juan de Fuca's
Seniors Centre on Saturday, July 21 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers,
donations can be made to the Juan de Fuca Seniors Centre in Fran's memory.

BIALKOWSKI, Wanda Wanda passed away peacefully at Saanich Peninsula Hospital
on July 6, 2007. Born in Poland on February 27, 1921 and predeceased by her
husband Ted in 1984, Wanda will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Lucy
(Ron) Sauve; 2 sons Richard (Joyce) and Larry (Isy); 4 grandchildren, Ken,
Vince, Samantha and Connor as well as family in Poland. A Mass will be
celebrated at St. Joseph the Worker Church, 785 Burnside Road West on
Tuesday, July 17 at 1:00 pm with interment to take place at Royal Oak Burial
Park. Following the burial, please attend a reception at First Memorial's
Garden Room adjoining the cemetery. 388106

CONNOR, Patrick Joseph Patrick Joseph Connor passed away at home on July 5,
2007 at the age of 69 with his family by his side. Pat will be greatly
missed and Iovingly remembered by his wife, Dianne; son, Kevin (Kuniko);
daughter, Tara (Frederic), three delightful grandchildren: Tristan, Claire
and Kai; brothers, Denis (Della) and Terry (Moira); sister, Maureen;
brother-in-law, Val; two nephews, four nieces and friends. He was
predeceased by his sister, Eila Mae in 2000. Pat was born in Arcola, Sask.
in 1938. When he was 3 years old, his family moved to the Victoria area
where he lived until attending UBC. After earning a BSc (Forestry) in 1962,
he worked in the forest industry for Crown Zellerbach in Courtenay and the
Queen Charlotte Islands and for Rayonier on northern Vancouver Island. In
1972, he joined Eurocan Pulp and Paper in Ootsa Lake and later transferred
to Kitimat where he rose to President before retiring in 1991. His
retirement in Comox was filled with fishing, golfing and enjoying nature,
music and reading. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he will also be
remembered for his sense of responsibility, determination and strong work
ethic. An informal gathering to celebrate Pat's life was held. A donation
may be made in Pat's memory to the Vancouver Island Lodge of the Canadian

deBEAUMONT, Janetta (Jenny Milne) 25th July, 1930 8th July, 2007 Born in
Greenock, Scotland, passed away at the age of 76 years at The Priory,
Victoria, BC. Father: William Kelly. Mother: Janet Kelly. Children: Billy
(deceased), Roberta and Janette (Robert). Grandchildren Terri/Chico, Tony/
Kajsa, Chrystal, Bob. Great grandchild: Ruby. Siblings: Mary, Jean,
Margaret, Bill & John. Mom was the oldest of 6 kids. Her family included
in-laws, Bertie, Mary, Cathy, Adam, Thelma, George, Eileen, Colleen and Del,
19 nieces, nephews and many great nieces and nephews. In 1946 she married
her first and only love, Willie, had 3 children, Billy, Roberta and Janette.
She came to Canada in 1955 in hopes of a brighter future for her family. She
worked as a nurse's aid and at numerous other jobs, including one at the new
Glendale Lodge. She completed her nurse's training and joined the staff at
Resthaven Hospital, moving to the Sannich Peninsula when it opened. After
marrying Richard, she spent the next 27 years sharing her home with some
former residents of Glendale and other individuals, including John, Phil,
Irene, Noreen, Peter, David, Bill, Jamie, Peter B. and David M. Her
contribution to the lives of everyone who came into her care was
immeasurable. Her home and garden were her pride and joy. Her family and
friends were her first priority. Anyone who knew her, loved her for her
generosity, kindness, warmth, down to earth values, deep respect of others
and most of all, her wonderful sense of humor. We want to acknowledge the
special contributions from Grant and her dear friends Anne and Daphne. We
also want to thank Crystal Ross and all the staff at Heritage Woods for
their wonderful care and sensitivity during this difficult time. We're at
loss for words to describe her physical beauty that was only surpassed by
her inner beauty. For all her hardships, grief and disappointments, she was
always our rock and the reason for our personal and emotional salvation. She
was our Mother Theresa and we will all miss her deeply, but she will always
be with us. Private service will be held on her birthday. Flowers are

DIMOCK, Judith Ellen (nee McLean) June 02, 1938 July 05, 2007 It is with
great sadness that we announce the passing of a beautiful Wife, Mother,
Sister, Grandmother, Aunt and Friend. Judy was born to Senator Donald A.
McLean and Catherine (nee Walsh) in St. John, New Brunswick. Judy was the
middle child of three, and leaves her older brother, Donald (Delta, B.C.)
and younger sister, Faith (Lake Utopia, New Brunswick). Judy lived her
earlier life in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick. She later became an R.N. and
married Dr. Gordon K. Dimock in 1959. Judy and Gordon had four children;
Donald (Beverly Waugh), Cathy (David Prette), Karl (Tammi Martin), and
Andrew (Patrick Sweeney), She is also survived by ten beautiful
grandchildren, Ryan, Kyle, Conor, Jessica, Miles, Cole, Jacob, Emery, Samuel
and Hailey. A private family service was held on Wednesday, July 11, 2007.

DRUMMOND, Charles Webster Born in Scotland March, 1919 July, 2007 Charles
will be greatly missed by his wife Irene, sons Robert (Gail), Gordon (Jan),
stepdaughters Sharon and Terry, 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren,
his sisters, Jean (Ralph), Salmon Arm and Shiela in Winnipeg. Predeceased by
his parents, two sisters, Ann, Margaret and brother Bain. During his
lifetime Charles was a member of U.C.T., Lion's Club and The Rotory Club.
His passion was volunteering at the B.C. Aviation Museum and sharing stories
with his Aviation pals. He was also proud to have worked on the Avro Arrow.
He was involved in the Jaun de Fuca Hospital Foundation as President for
many years. Since arriving in Victoria in 1972, he bought a small laundry,
and later a partnership in the Commercial Laundry. He also owned Renfrew
Health Care, Victoria Laundry and Daisy Fresh. Thank you to his special
friends in Tuesday's coffee group and his friends at the Stroke Recovery
Association. Thank you to the Victoria General Hospital nursing staff in 4A
South for their compassionate care. Cremation, no service by Charles

GARNER, Isabel Joan December 14, 1933 June 27, 2007 Joan Garner was a very
special lady who remained determined, funny, feisty, and hopeful until she
died on June 27 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She did not
battle her illness alone. Jack Garner, her husband of 56 years, battled with
her. Joan loved life. She enjoyed being with friends and family, and she
loved being with her husband at home or travelling the world. She was known
for being a terrific cook and a talented seamstress, especially of handmade
fabric dolls. She loved all animals, particularly her dogs, the deer she fed
from her hand, and the birds in her garden. She especially treasured
Christmas celebrations with her family. Joan was much loved and will be
missed by her husband, her family and her friends. A memorial and
celebration of Joan's life will be held at noon on Saturday, July 28 at
First Memorial Services, 1720 Bowen Road, Nanaimo, B.C. 387775

HAWKINS, Olive Lydia On July 2, 2007, Olive Lydia Hawkins passed away
peacefully at Rest Haven Lodge in Sidney, B.C. Olive was born in Medstead,
England in 1907, the only child of William Tollafield and Edith Winifred
Tollafield (nee Tomlinson). She came to Canada in 1919 with her parents and
finished school in Edmonton, Alberta. As a young woman, she worked for the
Hudson's Bay Company in Edmonton. While in Edmonton she met and later
married her husband, Edwin (Ted) Benson Hawkins on December 13, 1933. The
couple moved to Saanichton, B.C. in 1940 and operated a mink farm there for
many years. After the sale of their farm, Olive and Ted enjoyed many happy
years, boating along the B.C. coast and in their travels by motor home in
Canada and the United States. Olive enjoyed curling and was a long-time
member of the I.O.D.E. She was also an active volunteer with the Saanich
Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary. After Ted's death in 1978, Olive moved to
Summer Gate Village in Sidney in 1981. She moved to Rest Haven Lodge, Sidney
in December of 1996, where she had a happy home for the last 10 years.
Lovingly remembered by her niece, Joan Day of Edmonton, Alberta, her cousin
Pat Dowse of Swindon, Wilts, UK, her god daughter Joyce Kyle of Calgary,
Alberta, her dear long time friend Olive Whyte of Saanichton, B.C., and
their respective families. Special thanks to the staff of Rest Haven Lodge
for their excellent care, understanding and compassion over the years. In
accordance with Olive's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial

HEDLEY-SMITH, Beryl Arnold Passed away peacefully on July 10, 2007 at the
age of 85. Beryl was born on April 27, 1922 in Calgary, AB. She was
predeceased by her husband, Gordon, her son Stephen, brother Hugh and sister
Francis. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Robin (Charles),
Margaret (Bruce), Louise (Bruce), Barbara (Don), Stephanie (Mark) and 2
sons, Kenneth and Bruce (Mary Lou). She will also be missed by her sister
Shirley and her brother Fred (Joan). A memorial Service will be held on
Saturday July 14, 2007 at 11am at St. John The Divine Anglican Church,

HERMISTON, Marion B. A daughter of the late Norman and Hilda Verge, died on
Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria. Born in Halifax
on November 27, 1927. Marion lived all of her early years in Nova Scotia.
She met Fred (Val) Hermiston in Halifax and following their marriage in
1955, moved to Victoria, B.C. Marion worked most of her married life,
retiring from employment with the RCMP in 1979. In a new city so far from
home, Marion knew much loneliness at times, particularly when Val was away
at sea and she had the full responsibility and care of their three children.
She suffered a number of setbacks and traumas in her life, but possessed of
an inner strength, and tremendous fortitude, she rose always to meet these
challenges. Marion was an avid bridge player, a great cook, had great
organizational skills and loved gardening to the extent of volunteer
gardening at Government House. Her association with Goward House brought her
much enjoyment and pleasure. As well, she and Fred travelled a great deal
following their retirement, visiting many countries and places of interest.
Marion is survived by her loving husband, Fred; her daughters, Sheila Lehr
of Abbotsford and Glenda Woznica of Victoria; seven grandchildren and ten
greatgrandchildren. She is survived also by sisters, Jean Bradley of Halifax
and Norma Walker of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia; nephews, Mark and Robert
Walker and David and Robert Bradley. Marion is predeceased by sons, Graham
and Carter. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to McCall Bros. Funeral
Home with interment at Royal Oak Burial Park. Should you wish, a memorial
donation may be made to a charity or society of choice. A reception where
family and friends may meet for a time of reflection and light refreshments
will be held at Goward House, 2495 Arbutus Road, on Sunday, July 22, 2007 at

HERRIOTT, Leslie Raymond (Ray) B. June 10, 1921 D. July 5, 2007 Beloved
father, WW2 veteran, lifetime member of the Malahat Marauders Black Powder
Gun Club, grandpa and great-grandpa to many children. Predeceased by his
wife, Victoria in 1989. Ray died peacefully at home, surrounded by his
children Mike, Karen and Ray and his daughters-in-law, Ruth & Cherie. A man

KAATZ, Roswitha Reinhilde (nee Galland) Passed away peacefully on July 7,
2007 at Nanaimo General Hospital. Born in Munich, Germany, November 8, 1937,
and immigrated to Canada in 1950. She is survived by her family: loving
husband Hubertus; sons Michael (Jamie) and Robert (Pamela); daughter Linda;
grandchildren Airdrie, Michael, Lindsay and Erin. A special thank you to the

MAHER, Heather (Aveston) Wife, Mother, Haematology Technician. Heather, born
July 26 1926 passed away peacefully July 11 2007 after a spirited battle
with leukemia. Predeceased by her husband Joe and greatly missed by sons
Jonathan, Patrick, Kevin, daughter-in-laws Robin and Tracy, and grandsons
Brendan and Evan. In England, nieces Sarah and Isobel, nephews William,
Hugh, and Tom. Heather was born in Kingston on Thames England, and in 1956
emigrated with son Jonathan to Canada to become the lab technician for the
new Underhill Clinic in Kelowna. Several years later she moved to Vancouver
to run the haematology lab for the B.C. Cancer Institute. In Vancouver she
met Joseph Maher and raised two sons, Patrick and Kevin. A lover of early
and classical music, evolutionary theory, and her gardens, her expertise in
these areas will be missed by many. Her devotion to her family and her
uncompromising ethics were an inspiration to us all. Heather was always
proud of Canada's medical care system and wished to acknowledge the superb
care she received from Drs. Andrew Birch, Gayati Sreenivasan, and Christian
Rucker. We also wish to thank all the dedicated and compassionate nurses at
VGH Cell Separator Unit and Palliative Care Unit, especially Thikra, Kelly,
Barbara, and Mary. A service will be held at the Point Roberts Cemetery on
Wed. July 18 at 11:00 am followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, Mom
would appreciateeither a small donation to an animal or environmental
charity or a blood donation to the Canadian Blood Services. Love, the boys.

Manor Rest Home. Predeceased by her husband Al. She is survived by her son

RAMAN, Elohim Ely died at home, July 7th, 2007 in his 77th year. He is
survived by his wife Joan Lawrence, and her family Brad Arnold, Patrick
Arnold, Susan Ganderton, Susan & Greg Beatson and grandchildren, Patty and
Ryan Beatson. Ely was an inspired artist, professor, friend, and mentor to
many. He was honoured around the world for his creation of the OH Cards just
one of his contributions to keeping the intuitive alive and well. Ely said
and strongly believed the purpose of art is to honour the face of God." Join
us in honouring Ely at a Celebration of his life to be held on Thursday
August 16th at 1:30 pm at the University of Victoria Interfaith Chapel.

SALMOND, Kathleen Ruth Born in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, January 19, 1923
passed peacefully July 10, 2007 in Victoria. She was the daughter of Paul
and Sophie Cowley, and sister to Rachel, Pauline, Phyllis (all deceased),
Bill and Amy. She was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Air Force during
WW 2 in Ontario. She was married to Patrick Hammersley Salmond in 1948 until
his passing in 1996. She taught English, History and Drama from 1962 until
1983 at Belmont, Reynolds and Oak Bay High Schools. She was a World
Federalist, and a lifetime member of the NDP and the Victoria Church of
Victoria. She is survived by her children, Robert James Salmond and Suzanne
Elizabeth Mah and her granddaughters Rebecca Dyan Salmond, L. Brittney
Kreuzer and Lia Suzanne Marie Salmond. A Memorial Service will be held at
The Unitarian Church, 5575 West Saanich Rd. at 2pm on Tuesday, July 17,
reception to follow at Mrs. Salmonds house, 1449 Harrop Rd. Flowers declined

SAUNDERS, Freda Passed away on June 29th at the age of 89. She was born in
Victoria and attended Sir James Douglas School and Vic High. After school
she worked as a secretary before marrying Bert Saunders in 1945. For 29
years Freda and Bert operated their greenhouse business on five acres at the
corner of Blenkinsop and what is now Mackenzie, where they grew Saunders
Select" carnations and other cut flowers. In later years she worked at The
Bay and in Parksville's Gifts Galore. Freda was a kind, gentle person who
loved the outdoors, cooking delicious meals with produce from her garden,
spending time with family and friends and traveling with Bert. Company was
always warmly welcome at their French Creek retirement home. She is
predeceased by her husband and her daughter Lynne and leaves her son Bruce,
her daughterin-law Laurel, her grandsons Daniel and Paul, her brother-in-law
Jim and his wife Mart and many nieces and nephews. We especially want to
thank the staff at Mt. Tolmie Hospital for the wonderful warm and
compassionate care that they gave Freda in the last years of her life.

SCOATES, Reginald Stewart (R.C.E. Ret.) December 10, 1911 July 5, 2007 In
Nanaimo in his 96th year on July 5, 2007. Reg was the son of the late Rev.
Francis J. and Ada Scoates. Predeceased in 2004 by Ruth his cherished wife
of 68 years. Predeceased by elder brothers Eric and Donald. Survived by his
sisters Marjorie and Ruth, both of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Survived by his
loving son Jon (Mary) of Nanaimo, BC, grandchildren James (Dominique Weis)
of Vancouver, BC and Liz (Gordon Laidlaw) and great-grandchildren Josie and
Samuel of Nanaimo, BC. He will be greatly missed by nieces and nephews in
British Columbia and Nova Scotia. Reg was born in Faversham, England and
emigrated to Nova Scotia with his family in 1913. He met and married Ruth in
Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia. He enlisted as a sapper with the First
Field Company, R.C.E. in Halifax in July 1933, served in Winnipeg, Kingston
and Ottawa, and retired from military life in 1963 with the rank of captain.
He retired for a second time in 1976 from the City of Ottawa Property
Department. Reg and Ruth were active square dancers in Ottawa for many years
and were long time supporters of the congregation of McLeod-Stewarton United
Church in Ottawa. Reg and Ruth will be missed for their warm and graceful
hospitality, their polished sense of style and their generous Sunday waffle
brunches. A memorial service will be held at McLeodStewarton United Church,
Ottawa at a later date. Interment will take place in Musquodoboit Harbour,
Nova Scotia. 389569

SHIPTON, C. Bernard At 91 years of age on July 9, 2007 at home, peacefully
and not alone. Predeceased by his wife Victoria; much loved and deeply
respected by his four children Jacky, Harold, Deedy and Chris; by his
daughters-in-law Christien and Terri and his son-in-law Jean-Claude; a
plethora of grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and
a large extended family of friends. In lieu of flowers please send donations

WAY, Clifford James, Lieutenant Commander (RET'D) October 26, 1922 July 6,
2007 Clifford was born north of Treherne, Manitoba at S.E. 6-9-9. He is the
son of James Allin Way and Electa Loretta Moore (Lounsbury). He was
predeceased by Margaret his wife of 52 years (1997), his brother Harvie (MB)
and Joan BaxterWay (B.C.) in 2005. Clifford is survived by families of
daughter Caroline Ford, Whitehorse Yukon; son John (Francine) Way, Richmond,
B.C.; and daughter Barbara, Halifax, N.S. also the family of step-daughter
Moira Stockmann, Port Alberni, B.C. Clifford will be remembered by his
brother-in-law Alec Storm and family in Dunfermline Fife, Scotland;
sister-in-law Beryl Norman and family in Winnipeg, MB Clifford was a WWII
and Korean War Veteran while serving with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1938
1971 while active on HMCS Uganda and Ontario. From 1966 1969 he was Supply
Officer of HMCS Provider (HLFX). He acted as Supply Superintendent for the
construction of HMCS Preserver and HMCS Protector at St. John Shipbuilding
and Drydock Co. Ltd. from 1969 1972. He joined Kent Lines Ltd., St. John,
N.B. as Personnel Manager. Later, relocating to Nova Scotia he held
positions with the province in Departments of Education and Tourism acting
as Director of Adult Education and appointed Assistant Deputy Minister of
Tourism respectively. Upon final retirement Cliff and Margot moved to
Richmond, B.C. He was known for his kind, generous manner and his
supportive, ever encouraging nature. We will remember him as an exemplary pr
ovider and caregiver to those who touched his life. A viewing will be held
on Tuesday July 17 from 5pm to 8pm. A memorial service will be held Thursday
July 19, 2007 at 11am at First Memorial Funeral Services 1155 Fort Street.

WILCOX, Evelyn Marie (nee Fanini) Nanaimo, B.C., Evelyn died 10th July,
2007, suddenly in her sleep. Born 1st January, 1926, she grew up in Trail
B.C. where she lived till 1950. In April 1950, she then moved to Nanaimo
B.C. with her husband and daughter where she remained to this day. She was a
career woman, last working as an administrative assistant for many years
with Shell Oil until her retirement in 1982. Prior to this and with her
co-owner husband and his mom and dad, she worked in the fish & chip
restaurant (Belair Coffee Shop) in Departure Bay for their first 5 years in
Nanaimo. She also worked for other prominent local businesses. She had
volunteered her time to St. Anne's school and church, having been president
of St. Anne's Auxiliary. She curled, golfed, loved to swim and dance and to
travel. She belonged to the Nanaimo Golf Club for many years. In her early
years, she had received many trophies and medals for highland and Irish
dancing. She loved her family and her many friends to whom she was so loyal.
We shall miss her raucous laughter, easy sense of humour, and her penchant
for trying to fix anything! She is survived by her loving husband of 62 yrs,
Eldon (Joe), daughter Marlane (husband GuyRejean), grandson Andre (wife
Shelby) and great grand-daughters Aejah and Lylah. Memorial services will be
held at the Sands Funeral Chapel, One Newcastle Ave., Nanaimo B.C. at Monday
16th July at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the
Heart & Stroke or Cancer Foundations. 388963

WILSON, Shirley Joan (nee Bellamy) May 22, 1933 July 11, 2007 Shirley passed
away peacefully at Saanich Peninsula Hospital after a short struggle with
A.L.S. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Shirley was born in
Winnipeg Manitoba to Herbert and Grace Bellamy. She was predeceased by both
her parents and her younger sister Donna. She is survived by her loving and
devoted husband Ray of 47+ ; son Norman of Edmonton, Alberta; daughter Grace
(Nelson) of Langford, British Columbia.; son Steve (Cheryl) of Bruderhiem,
Alberta; 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and her brother Bruce
(Diane) of Ottawa, Ontario. Shirley lived her life in the prairies before
settling into the Sidney area where she and her husband own/ operated the
Sidney Home Hardware from 1977 to 1992. After retiring from the store in
1992 they enjoyed the snowbird life" in Yuma, Arizona. While in Yuma,
Shirley was an active member of the quilting and video library clubs. She
was a loving and thoughtful person, always generous and giving of her time
and of herself to others. Shirley was diagnosed with ALS in January of 2006.
During her struggle with this disease she was attended by the nursing staff
of the Saanich Peninsula Home and community Health Unit. We thank them for
their tender and thoughtful care and in particular wish to thank Carmel
Macdonald, R.N. and Nancy Schultz of Occupational Therapy. We also would
like to thank Dr. Gagliardie for her devotion to Shirley during her illness.
A memorial service will be held at First Memorial in Royal Oak on Tuesday,
July 17 at 10:00 a.m. In Lieu of flowers please make a cash donation, in
loving memory of Shirley Wilson, to the ALS Society, 1007 Bramfield Place,
Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, V8M 1A4. Lord when my soul takes flight,
may if rise swiftly to live forever in your love and care." 388935
