ARCHER, Mary Frances Mary (Mollie) Archer, died on July 31, 2007, at
Glengarry Care Home, Fairfield Road, Victoria. She will be sadly missed and
fondly remembered by her children Christon (Carol), Lynne (David), and
Darrel (Anthea); grandchildren Karen, Kenneth, Keven, Katherine, John, Rob,
Margaret, Maryann, and Richard; and great grandchildren Jaysen, Jorden,
Brandon, Miranda, Nathan, Erik; James and stepgrandchildren Adam and Nicola.
Mollie was born in Victoria on February 27, 1915, the only child of Christon
and Miriam Palliser. In 1938 she married John Rolfe Archer who predeceased
her on June 8th, 2007 they are now reunited. Mollie began her teaching
career in the 1930's at Sheridan Lake near Lone Butte in the Cariboo and at
Lytton. After living for years in Victoria where she taught part time, in
1954 the family settled at Kelvin Creek Ranch on Jackson Road in the
Cowichan Valley. In addition to working long hours to restore the farm and
to produce organically grown crops, Mollie taught at Fairbridge, Alexander
and Koksilah elementary schools. With Jack and son Darrel, Mollie ran summer
Children's Camp during the 1960's and operated Western Riding Stables. She
retired from teaching and pioneered Family Farm Vacations in British
Columbia which thrived under the Youth Development Branch of the government
in the late 1970's. Guests enjoyed garden to table meals, helped pick wild
berries and took guided horse trail rides. Mollie was a strong advocate of
good local food and conservation. Mollie left the farm in 1978 to devote
more time to spinning and weaving. She was a member and president of the
Tzouhalem Spinners and Weavers. After living for some years at Whiskey Point
at Mill Bay, she and Jack became early residents of Arbutus Ridge where they
maintained their 'Back to the Land' philosophy and started the Arbutus
Ramblers. Following an unfortunate medical accident in 1990 that led to the
eventual loss of her right eye, Mollie's health gradually deteriorated. The
family wishes to thank Dr. Barbara Roback and the wonderful nurses and staff
members of Chandler Unit at Glengarry Care Home in Victoria who took care of
Mollie during her struggle with dementia. Mollie retained her charm,
determination and was never idle. The celebration of life will be held at
First Memorial Chapel, Royal Oak at 2pm on Thursday, August 9th, 2007.
