SIPOS, Linda August 19, 1968 August 1, 2007 It is with enormous sadness that
we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved Linda on August
1. Linda, her husband Stan and her children Johnathon and Christina had
returned to Victoria from Panama in late July to enable a thorough
evaluation of certain heartrelated difficulties Linda experienced during
their blue-water sailing trip. At that time they were almost half way into
what was intended to be an 18 month family journey of a lifetime. Although
this journey was cut short by Linda's untimely death, their travels to that
point had provided a supremely joyful and enriching experience for the
family and the foundation for countless wonderful memories that will be
cherished forever. Linda and Stan's paths first crossed at the Victoria
YM-YWCA in 1991. At that time Linda was working at the Y while completing
her B.Ed. degree at UVIC. Stan quickly recognized that he had discovered in
Linda the person of which dreams are truly made a beautiful, intensely
grounded woman whose many wonderful qualities and gentle manner shone as
brightly as the stars. Their near-fairytale courtship encompassed Linda's
completion of her degree in 1992 and, by dint of Stan's innately adventurous
spirit, found them sharing many unique experiences which brought them
increasingly closer as a couple. To the absolute joy of all who knew them
they were married in 1993. Linda worked as a substitute teacher at St.
Patrick's and St. Joseph's Elementary Schools until the birth of Johnathon
in 1994. Three years later she and Stan were blessed yet again by the birth
of Christina. Linda treasured her children beyond words and could not have
been more devoted to ensuring their general well being and their development
of the values and qualities for which she was so well known and esteemed.
She was also deeply committed to ensuring that the privilege she and Stan
have been able to accord their children neither impeded nor undermined this
development. For several years Linda's athleticism and general enjoyment of
life had been significantly compromised by irresolvable complications
arising from a viral infection of her heart. She was characteristically
undaunted by this and responded by channeling her energies into her love of
gardening and volunteer work, inclusive of becoming the volunteer
coordinator for the SMUS junior school library. Despite the immensity of her
medical challenges Linda unfailingly faced them with stoic grace and
courage. Her efforts to overcome them were matched step for step by Stan,
something which continually highlighted the depth of their love and their
profound devotion to each other. The tragedy of Linda's untimely passing is
especially difficult for her mother Georgine Bakker, her sister Jazmine
Miranda, her aunt Dinika Bakker, her father Henry Bakker, her
brother-in-laws John (Donna) and Norm Sipos, and many other family members,
all of whom she loved dearly, as well as friends too numerous to mention.
The family is eternally grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love,
friendship and support bestowed on them by so many. Please join us for a
celebration of Linda's life on Thursday, August 9, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. at the
St. Michael's University School Chapel, Richmond Road, followed by a
reception at the Victoria Golf Club. In lieu of flowers those wishing to do
so may make a donation in Linda's memory to the Victoria YM-YWCA Partners
with Youth Campaign or the BC Heart Foundation. She was so pure, so precious
and gave us so much in such a short time." 396897

SMITH, E. Eleanor (nee Parfitt) September 17, 1903 August 3, 2007 After a
short illness, looking serene, our mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother, Eleanor Smith, passed away, just six weeks before her
104th birthday. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Ltd. Col. Douglas
Edgar Smith, a popular and much loved Victoria High School teacher. She is
survived by her sons, Brian and Alan, daughters-in-law, Barbara, Petra, and
Barbara Courtney Young (Michael), mother of grandchildren Claire Smith
(Andrew) and Christopher Smith (Cory); and by grandchildren, Aubyn
Freybe-Smith (Katie), Antonia FreybeSmith (Adam), Kristen Farquharson
Sartori (George); and four great-grandchildren, Ryan, Gabrielle, Camryn and
Sam; her niece, Dorothy Myers (Arnie); and grand-niece and grandnephew,
Lesley Myers and Ray Montrey. She was predeceased by her brother, Ray
Parfitt (Mabel); and by her niece, Helen Montrey. Eleanor was born in
Victoria in 1903, to Laura (nee Matthew) and Aaron Parfitt who arrived from
England in 1889. Eleanor attended Girls' Central School and graduated from
Victoria High School and Victoria Normal School. She taught school in BC for
eight years at Spring Ridge in Victoria, and Goldstream, Royston and
Hazelton, most of which were one-room schools. Her childhood in Victoria
focused around family, music and church. She grew up with forty Parfitt
cousins who camped at Shoal Bay and Mt. Douglas Park where the Parfitt
family owned summer campsites. Her father, Aaron, with his four brothers,
built many of Victoria's heritage brick buildings, including China Town
after the 1906 fire, the James Bay Inn (1911), St. John's Church (Quadra
St., 1911), and the Bay Street Armories (1915). The largest project of
Parfitt Brothers' Ltd. was the construction of Christ Church Cathedral
(1926-1929). In 1932 Eleanor married her high school beau, Doug Smith. In
1938 they built a home on Cavendish Avenue where they lived until 1954 and
then moved to a new home they designed on Oakdowne Road where she lived for
53 years. Eleanor maintained a lifelong interest in music, latterly through
the Symphony and Conservatory of Music. Always a social spirit, Eleanor
attended her last meeting of her PEO sisterhood only weeks before she died,
being an active member for over 56 years. She served on the Altar Guild of
St. Luke's Church for years and was a longstanding member of the Oak Bay
Garden Club, the Dicken's Society and the Retired Teachers' Association.
Although widowed for 30 years, she maintained an active social life with
friendships that spanned her few surviving contemporaries and reached into
her grandchildren's generation. She was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays
and attended a game in Seattle with her sons to celebrate her 95th birthday.
She was also a loyal fan of Tiger Woods whose golf achievements she followed
right up to the recent British Open. She gave talks and newspaper interviews
on the social history of Victoria up to the age of 97, which is also when
she reluctantly "surrendered" her driver's license. We will all miss her
indomitable spirit and her incredible interest and involvement in the lives
of her family, her many friends and neighbours. Special thanks are offered
to the caring staff of Glenwarren (Central Park Lodges), Dr. McGregor, Dr.
Medhurst, Dr. Lapp and longtime caregivers, Diana Lowres, Pierette Reid, the
caring members of the Chapter AA of the PEO Sisterhood and the dedicated
caregivers from South Vancouver Island Home Care and the staff of the Royal
Jubilee. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's Church, 3821 Cedar
Hill Cross Roads, Victoria, on Saturday, September 8th at 2:30 pm, followed
by a reception in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made
to the BC Provincial Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood c/o 2668 Cavendish
Avenue, Victoria BC, V8R 2G6. 396916
