MacKAY, Malcolm Ian Died November 14, 2007, after a short battle with
cancer. Born December 31, 1923, in Tisdale, Saskatchewan. Malcolm MacKay, or
Mac, as he preferred, was born into a medical family. His father, Murdock,
was an energetic and outgoing prairie physician, who died when Mac was nine
years old, however, the imprint left by Murdock on Mac was a lifelong deep
impression. During high school Mac worked hard to maintain marks to enable
him to enroll in university to fulfill his dream to become a physician,
however, mastering French was one of Mac's obstacles. With the outbreak of
WW2 Mac was enrolled in the pre medical program at the University of
Saskatoon. It was well understood that any failing pre-med students would
soon be off to the war as medics, Mac succeeded and graduated from the
premedical program. Mac's horizon soon shifted from Saskatchewan to Toronto,
Ontario. Mac enrolled at the University of Toronto to fulfill his dream of
becoming a medical doctor like his father. After graduation, Mac now felt he
would further his career as a general surgeon. His father's Tisdale partner,
Dr. McQueen, caught wind of Mac's ambitions, and encouraged Mac to spend a
year as an intern at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB. While in Calgary,
Mac met his future wife, Lucielle (Sue). Mac and Sue headed back to Toronto,
where they were detoured to Montreal, and finally to New York City, where
Mac would become chief resident of general surgery at Bellevue Hospital.
While at Bellevue a senior general surgeon took notice of Mac's abilities
and offered Mac a partnership in a well established general surgery
practice. Mac readily accepted, but the U.s. army felt that Mac would
benefit more from serving as general surgeon in the Korean War. It was the
midnight train from New York City to Montreal that precluded Mac's U.S.
military career, and a surgical career in New York City. Now back in Canada,
in the middle of winter in 1954, Mac selected Victoria as a fine place to
practice medicine, also encouraged by his welcoming mother who lived in
Victoria. Mac's wife was soon to follow, and Mac's career was quickly
flourishing. He partnershipped with Hugh Ford and Jack Stenstrom, from there
Mac would not look back. Mac continued his training and in 1964 attended
vascular surgical training in Houston Texas, under DeBakey and Cooley.
Again, Mac's desire to learn and improve as a physician would benefit him in
his career in Victoria. Mac would become one of the finest general surgeons
on the west coast. He felt that whatever "you do, enjoy what you do, and do
it well! " Mac's first love was that of surgery, out of his desire to
fulfill his father's expectations. Mac loved the game of golf, bird hunting,
and fishing, and never was there an opportunity missed for a fun time as all
who knew him will attest. In his last years Mac was privileged to have a
core group of friends that he golfed with and aged with, they are truly the
lifelong friends that we all work to have and cherish. As well, in the last
four years Mac enjoyed the company of Naomi and Kevin who acted as
caregivers to help him in his own home. Mac is survived by his loving
sister, Margaret Seens, his two sons, Ian (unmarried), and Gavin, wife Lori,
and two loving grand daughters, Claire, and Ellen, and his dog Izzy. He
loved Claire and Ellen to no end. A memorial service will follow in late
spring, early summer. 425943

himself to report anything amiss to the Coast Guard. He was a Life member of

rescuing fellow boaters. After remarrying in 1995 he moved to Duncan where
