COVIL, Bill (Frank) Passed away peacefully in his home at Luther Court, on
December 2, 2007. He is predeceased by Irene Joyce Covil, his wife of 52
years. Bill was born in Bromley, Kent, England, and had three siblings:
Ernie, Peggy and Marjorie. From the age of fifteen he lived with his second
family, the Bridgers. In 1939, at the age of eighteen, Bill joined the Royal
Army Service Corps and served through World War II. At Dunkirk, amidst the
chaos, a machine gun was thrust into Bill's hands and he was conscripted
into performing rear-guard perimeter duty, being among the last to leave the
beaches. Despite this, he also had fond memories and stories of the times he
spent in England, Ireland and France. Although Bill would laughingly recount
that he finished basic training with the comment that he was "pleasant and
easy-going but lacking discipline", his Record of Service shows that he left
the Army in 1946 with "Exemplary military conduct". Following the war Bill
returned to England, and drove a double-decker bus for London Transport.
There he met Joyce, a conductoress on his bus. Bill and Joyce took day trips
around England on his motorbike and Bill had high praise for Joyce's skill
as a sidecar rider. They married and raised three children: Martin,
Caroline, and Angela. In 1969 the family moved from England to Victoria.
Bill worked for the City of Victoria, and then with the school board at
Frank Hobbs School, where he worked until his retirement. He was commended
for working exceptionally well with the staff and students. Bill's family
came first in his life, and he always worked hard for them. His children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great source of joy and pride,
and he cherished the time they spent together. Bill was caring and honest,
with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and he also liked to have fun.
He was an avid tennis player and enjoyed snooker and golf. He will be
remembered as "an admirable fellow" and a gentleman. Bill will be much
missed by his family and friends in Canada and England, including his
grandchildren Danny, Sarah, Nathan and Michelle, son-in-law Ian,
sister-inlaw Ruby, her husband David and their family, niece Jacqueline, the
Bridgers, and his good friend Beryl. Many thanks to Dr. Brook and all the
caring folk at Luther Court who helped Bill to live his last year with
dignity, and who made his last few days comfortable for all of us. Service
to be held at the First Memorial Funeral Services at 1155 Fort Street on
Friday, December 7 at 11 am. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations, if
desired, may be made to the Luther Court Society. 429910

the Department of National Defence, first at a research lab outside Medicine
Hat, Alberta then in Toronto. In 1965 they retired to a former Doukhobor
farm outside Qualicum Beach, a forested sanctuary Nancy enjoyed for over 40
years. Nancy taught piano for nearly 70 years and was an inspiration and
guiding light to many students. Many people were also touched by her deep
Christian faith and generous heart. As a young mother attending a free
church in Scotland she came alive in the spirit and committed her life to
His service. In the 1950s she became an Associate with the Sisters of St.
John the Divine based in Toronto. As a long-time member of St. Mark's
Anglican Church she served as choir director and warden and was a founding
