COCKBURN, Patricia (nee Cowan) January 18, 1927 February 3, 2007 Pat (
"Peter "), of Victoria, passed away peacefully after a brief illness. Born
in Cumberland and raised in Duncan, Peter spent most of her long, active
life with her husband Bill far away from Vancouver Island before retiring to
Victoria in 1988. As a Bachelor of Commerce student at UBC she joined the
Delta Gamma sorority, of which she was a lifelong member. After completing
her degree in 1948, Peter worked for a year in Victoria before moving to
Ottawa, where she held a number of positions, including at Statistics Canada
and the CBC. In Ottawa, Peter met Bill Cockburn, a native of Glasgow,
Scotland, whom she married in 1950. In 1959, her full-time career was
interrupted to raise two children, Bruce and Sally, but she continued to do
freelance work as a contractor. With her children at university, she
returned to full-time jobs with Complan Research and later with Gallup
Canada. Throughout her life, Peter enjoyed her passion for tennis. She won
the junior BC women's championship in 1948 and 1949, and the Rideau Club
ladies tournament in Ottawa in 1951. In 1997, she was a member of the
winning VI-level team at the BC team tennis tournament. However, most of her
tennis was as social as it was competitive. Bill's scientific career took
the family to Belgium from 1969 to 1973, an adventure that allowed Peter to
explore European culture, to learn French and to form lasting friendships
with people from several European countries. She also easily made friends
during their postings to Bonn, Germany, from 1979 to 1983, and Washington,
DC, from 1983 to 1988. At all of these homes, Peter was quick to get
involved in volunteer work, including with the Canadian Mental Health
Association in Ottawa, the National Art Gallery in Washington, DC, where she
was a docent in French, and the Alzheimer Society in Victoria. Peter will be
greatly missed by Bill; Bruce, Sally, and their spouses Judy and Onno; and
relatives around the world. Her energy, sense of humour and enthusiasm will
also be remembered by her numerous friends. A memorial service will be held
in Victoria on March 18 or 19 (details to be announced). In lieu of flowers,
please send donations to the Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care
Foundation, 1952 Bay Street, Victoria, BC, V8R 1J8, www.victoriahospice.org

JAMIESON, Margaret Patricia Harris Born at Union Bay February 23, 1923,
Margaret passed away at 12:20 a.m. on February 8, 2007. Margaret was
educated at St. Ann's Academy in Victoria. Her parents, Patrick and Ethel
Harris, moved to the city so that she and her older brother Frank could
receive a Catholic education which formed a permanent values legacy in their
lives and the lives of their children. Margaret married James Easton
Jamieson in 1942, a career soldier who retired to Victoria with Margaret in
1977 after their six children had flown the nest. Margaret and Jim were very
active with refugee sponsorship work since 1979. Margaret was very proud of
their children and their accomplishments but as she expressed in 1992 at the
couple's fiftieth wedding anniversary party, she was most happy because her
children all liked each other. This theme of balance and compatibility
characterized her deepest aspirations, that her children be happy and
fulfilled no matter what their lines of pursuit. Her eldest daughter Rita
owns the Royal Dance at the Forks in Winnipeg, a tiny dance school she
founded over 30 years ago that is now one of the largest of its kind in
Western Canada. Her other daughter, Christine teaches Christian ethics in
the Department of Theological Studies at Concordia University in Montreal.
James Jr., the eldest son is a retired Army colonel and a career social
worker with the military. He currently works with post-traumatic stress
treatment with the medical services branch of the Canadian military. Tony,
her fifth child, is a Partnership Executive for IBM Canada in Winnipeg.
Eugene, the youngest, specialized in Labour law and now serves in the office
of the Chief provincial Judge for British Columbia in Vancouver. The only
child to reside in Victoria, since 1986, Patrick is a writer and published
author, founding with Jim and Margaret, Island Catholic News in 1987.
Margaret was the proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren Patty, Rachel, Sarah,
Hannah, Martha, Eden, Sean, Sam, Ella and Gabriel and one great grandchild,
Jamie. Margaret was extremely personable and hospitable with an enormous
capacity to enjoy life. She had a sharp mind and held strong opinions on
social matters and moral issues which she ably defended but was always open
to the ideas of others, even her children who claimed to have formed her
education during the second half of her life. She was an information seeker,
listening avidly to CBC Radio and reading the newspaper daily. While she had
a deep respect for authority this was balanced by a sensible and informed
sense of her own selfworth and the value of her own opinions lending her
children a bias toward the critical edge of knowledge. Margaret worked for
many years at Eaton's Personnel Department in Chilliwack and Winnipeg and
worked for 10 years in Victoria for the B. C. Ferry Corporation. Prayers and
a memorial service will be held at St. Joseph's Friary, 1076 Joan Crescent
on Sunday, February 11 at 7pm and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St.
Andrew's Cathedral, Blanshard at View Streets on Monday, February 12 at 1:30
pm. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Saint Andrews Refugee
Association or the Victoria Hospice. Jim Jamieson and his children wish to
express their gratitude to Dr. Barbara Roback and to the staff of the
Victoria Hospice for assisting Margaret in taking her leave in a dignified
and humane manner which is exactly how she lived her life. 339343

Audrey was born in Edmonton, Alberta and lived there until 1976, where she
had been no stranger to hard work with a family and a grocery business to
run, while her husband, Frank farmed. After moving to Victoria to retire,
she enjoyed many social activities such as bowling, lawn bowling and silver
thread craft groups. She enjoyed puttering in her garden with Frank and
getting outdoors on her scooter. Audrey especially enjoyed meeting new
people with a big welcome and getting involved with various committees and
numerous social groups. The last 3 years of her life were spent at Highgate
Lodge and were especially fulfilling with her outgoing personality. A
special thank you to the staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for their
exceptional care. The interment of Audrey's cremated remains will be held at
Hatley Memorial Gardens, 2050 Sooke Road, Victoria, BC (across from Royal

LINDSAY, Samuel Blair D.F.C. On Sunday February 4, 2007, the community lost
a man of honour, integrity, honesty and great humour. Blair was born on
Feburary 17, 1923 in Rossburn, Manitoba. Predeceased by his father and
mother (Jack and Alice) and his sister Eleanor, he is survived by his loving
wife of 60 years, Gwen, his two sons and their spouses, Richard (Jan) and
Timothy (Randi), his sisters Sheila and Mona (Clayte Swanson), his brothers
Garf (Ann) and Robert (Mary), his grandchildren Sean, Kelly, Steven and
Christopher, and many nieces and nephews. Blair voluntarily enlisted in the
Royal Canadian Air Force on August 19, 1942, at the age of 19. He trained
and qualified as Bomb Aimer, Air Gunner and Navigator, in Ontario, New
Brunswick and Nova Scotia, his eyesight thwarting his ambition to be a
pilot. He was sent overseas and stationed in MiddletonSt. George, England
with the 419th Moose squadron, and with which he flew many missions. On
November 1, his Lancaster bomber was attacked by two fighter planes. He and
two others were wounded. Two engines were knocked out as well as the
hydraulics, intercom and instruments. The starboard wing was on fire. He was
able to extinguish the fire and despite his wounds and lack of equipment,
navigate the plane back to England for a crash landing at an emergency
landing strip on the British coast. The plane was a total wreck" but all
crew survived. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for Great
Gallantry". He never spoke about it. On September 8, 1945 he was discharged
from active service (in receipt of $118.75 from the Department of National
Defence representing 25 cents per day for 475 days of overseas service). He
returned to Rossburn, Manitoba to commence his long career with the Bank of
Montreal and to marry the love of his life, Gwineth Mae Gunn. He and Gwen
raised two wonderful sons. He spent 42 years with the Bank, providing
banking services in many communities including Reston, Regina, Neepawa,
Nipawin, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, NATO base in Marville,
France, Kingston, Jamaica and Nassau, Bahamas. During his career he held
many senior positions with the Bank but more importantly, he and Gwen
developed a host of friendships which they maintained over many years. In
1986 he retired from the Bank and moved to Nanaimo. He fully enjoyed his
retirement and particularly his golf at the Nanaimo Golf Club and his long
time participation as a Rotarian. During his life he was an active curler,
golfer, duck hunter, fisherman and traveler. As his health deteriorated, his
participation dwindled, but his interest remained. Blair had an avid
interest in current events and held an opinion on many topics. While not
always politically correct", he was prepared to share his views with anyone
who would listen and even with those who would not. Some might even say he
was a bit of a ---disturber. He will be sadly missed by his family and many
friends. He was a proud Canadian. He had a good ride"! If desired, donations
to the Lung Association in Blair's memory would be appreciated. 339310

THOMSON, C. Gordon 1913 2007 On January 30th, peacefully in his sleep, we
lost our beloved Gord at the age of 94. Known as Mr. Thomson to many, he
served for several decades as teacher and vice-principal in the Saanich
School District, retiring in 1975. He also enjoyed two years teaching at
AFCENT in the Netherlands. Born in Dublin, Ireland during the troubles, he
emigrated to Duncan in 1927 with his parents who were seeking a better life
for their three sons. A year later they moved to a farm near Prospect Lake.
During the depression, Gord interrupted his education to help his mother
with the farm, selling chickens and eggs throughout Victoria and working for
HBC. He later attended Victoria Normal School and gained his education
degree from UBC. After teaching briefly in Salmon Arm, his life was once
again interrupted, this time by the Second World War. He enlisted and served
in the RCAF as a Navigator with Pathfinders Squadron. In Dad's own words,
the one good thing about that time was that he met his beloved Scottish
war-bride, Jeannie. Returning to Canada, Gord resumed his teaching career,
and they started their family life together. He was a loving father to his
four children and a wonderful husband to Jean, who predeceased him in 1989.
After his retirement, the two enjoyed many years of travelling, golfing,
symphony concerts, bridge with friends and time spent with family. Ever the
gentleman, Gord was always concerned with the welfare of others. He was
respected for his intelligence and loved for his quick wit and kind nature.
He lived his life with gratitude, optimism and determination. He was the
grand old man of our family. He loved gardening, books and knowledge,
languages, and was a dedicated letter writer. Until his last year, he never

TIMS, Kathleen (Kitty) Alice (nee Page) Peacefully passed away at Langley
Gardens, Langley, on January 30, 2007 at the age of 94. Wife of the late
John William Tims. Lovingly remembered by her sons John (Gaye), Michael
(Mark Krayenhoff), and her grandchildren Talisa and Keenan. Kitty grew up in
London, UK, where she first married Marcel Quadry, and with his help began
her own business, a hairdressing salon in fashionable Chelsea in the
thirties. Marcel was killed while flying with the Royal Canadian Air Force
during World War II. She subsequently married John (Jack) Tims, his copilot
and best friend, and came to Vancouver by boat during the last months of the
war. Jack and Kitty were posted around Canada, from Fort Nelson on the Alask
a Highway to St. Jean d'Iberville outside of Montreal, eventually leaving
the Air Force when the Forces were combined in 1963. For twenty-five years
they ran an apple orchard in the Okanagan Valley, outside Penticton. Finally
they retired to Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island, where Jack Tims died in
1988. Kitty's strength, compassion, bravery and humour continue to be our
inspiration. A graveside service will be held at the Ross Bay Cemetery,
Victoria, at 1 pm on Monday, February 12. 338365
