BIRD, Edward George Edward George Bird passed away suddenly on the morning
of April 22, 2007. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Sharon,
his two sons Steve and Chris, his sister Diane (Lorne) Laughlin, and many
special aunts, uncles, and cousins. Ed was born in 1942 in Victoria, BC into
the same home which he now leaves. Following his father's sudden death in
1958, Ed cared for his ailing mother until her passing in 1965. He would go
on to graduate from the University of Manitoba, and joined the physiotherapy
department at the Royal Jubilee Hospital where he would remain for thirty
years before medical problems forced him into early retirement. During that
time he became known throughout the hospital system for his dedicated work
with patients and his patient teaching of numerous young nurses, paramedics,
and therapists. Ed was also a founding member of the West Gorge and District
Ratepayers Association, serving as its president for 15 years, as well as a
vocal advocate for local residents. In his nine years of retirement, he came
to enjoy walking around the neighbourhood he had spent his entire life in,
and was often seen chatting with people on the street or enjoying a lunch at
the local restaurants. In the months before his death he would spend many
hours sitting in his yard, listening to nature, and admiring his beloved
gardens. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. A memorial
service will be held at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1803 Quadra St, on Tuesday,
May 1, at 10:00AM, followed by interment at the Royal Oak Burial Park.
