built a home in Gordon Head where she resided until her death. Joan was
proud of her deep roots in Victoria and spent the last years of her life
gathering information on her family; she was a descendant of both the Wille
family (Wille's Bakery) and the Baker family (Baker Brick and Tile/Victoria
Ice Company). Joan was predeceased by her father, Frances Stanley Cross, her
mother; Queenie Cross (Baker); her husband of nearly 50 years, Robert; and
her nephew David Maeren. Joan is survived by her husband, Stuart Hadfield
(his daughter Zea, son Darren and grandchildren Zachary and Mia); her
children, Dale (Alexa) and their children Aidan and Declan, Vancouver, B.C.;
Laura Winter (Bruce) and their children, Christina, Eric and Vanessa,

Winnipeg, Man; and nephew David's children Chantel and Melissa, Winnipeg,
Man.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Wilks (Jack), Victoria, B.C., and her children,

lifetime collecting friends and being very involved in the community. She
was a long-time employee with School District 61, spending most of her
working years at Fairburn Elementary School and Arbutus Jr. High School. She
enjoyed a special friendship with Delores Stevens (Robinson) for over 65
years through school years, marriages, children, grandchildren and
retirement. Joan enjoyed many hobbies, activities and travel, particularly
taking cruises. Joan and Stu met through the Victoria Hospice family socials
in late 2005 and enjoyed a brief (November 2006), but satisfying and very
happy marriage. Joan passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 21st from a
short, but courageous fight with acute leukemia and surgery, with Stu by her
side. All who knew her feel she is gone much too soon. Many thanks to
everyone for their kind messages of condolence. Donations may be made in
Joan's name to the Victoria Hospice Outreach Programs or to a charity of
your choice. Joan's friends and extended family are cordially invited to
