SULLIVAN, Brenda Adelaide (Goode, nee Goldstraw) January 7th, 1914 May 9th,
2007 Our dear matriarch, precious mother, wife and Nana passed away in the
loving care of family, staff and volunteers at Victoria Hospice, after an
emergency visit to RJH on Monday, May 7th. Brenda was predeceased by her
adoring first husband, Clarence Shirley Goode, in 1987, and her treasured
only son, Nigel Christopher John, in 1997. Left to mourn her passing are
husband William Sullivan, daughters Daphne Goode, Diana Gordon (Jim) and
Patricia Reid, all of Victoria, her cherished only grandson, Ian Reid of
Kamloops BC, many relatives in England and countless friends in Canada and
abroad. Brenda was born in Sale, Cheshire, England, into a family whose
members loved the arts and cultivated hard work. She enjoyed several careers
including war experience as a member of the Womens Auxiliary Air Force at
Headquarters Fighter Command, Royal Air Force at Stanmore, England. She was
a sought after reporter at The Daily Mail in England with a lifelong love of
the spoken and written word. A dedicated scribe, she wrote many poems and
essays, was a wicked Scrabble competitor and determined crossword
participant. Upon coming to Canada in the 1940s Brenda enjoyed her role as a
pioneering businesswoman and owner of the Sidney Antique Shop and Oak Bay
Drygoods. As Executive Secretary to several Deputy Ministers in the BC Mines
and Petroleum Branch of the BC Government she excelled and enjoyed a new
found passion, exploring minerals and gems. Although ambitious and energetic
beyond measure in her various careers, Brenda's favourite role was
undoubtedly that of mother and homemaker. She treasured her husband,
children and family life and created a remarkably supportive household while
enjoying a wide and varied circle of friends. There was always enough to
share with friends, or those on short term leave from the Armed Forces, at
the Goode household. Brenda was a consummate cook, gardener, seamstress,
tennis player, baker, coach, pianist and bridge player. She was a huge
supporter of the Victoria Symphony and early Bastion Theatre and hosted The
Shakespearean Players for rehearsals in her living room in the 60s and 70s.
She was immensely proud of her children and grandchild, believing in
parenting for life, with rich, wonderful and pleasantly surprising results.
At the age of 77 she fell in love with fellow Cestrian, William Sullivan,
recently widowed from Babs Sullivan, wife of 52 years. Brenda and Bill were
married in 1991 and travelled to New Zealand, Alaska, Ottawa, Alberta and
various parts of B.C., while also enjoying romantic getaways to Qualicum
Beach. They continued a wonderful life at Lochside by the Lake and later at
The Kensington, making new friends together and participating in very
meaningful social times. The family thanks the caring staff at Saanich
Peninsula Hospital, B.C. Ambulance Service, Triage, Hub and 2 West units at
RJH and the angels at Victoria Hospice for their dedication and kindness to
Brenda and her family. Those wishing to support Mums favourite charities are
requested to consider The Victoria Symphony, The Land Conservancy and
Victoria Hospice. A traditional Anglican funeral will be held Thursday, May
17th at 2 p.m. at St. Lukes Church, 3821 Cedar Hill X Rd., interment to
follow at Royal Oak Burial Park. Condolences for the family gratefully
received at 3207 Kenya Pl., Victoria, B.C., V8P 3T9. Funeral arrangements
entrusted to Haywards, Thomson and Irving. 368509
