DEVEREAUX LOUISE MARIE (NEE HAMMARSTROM) April 6, 1930 - March 30, 2008 On a
Sunday evening in early spring, after a long struggle, Louise lost her
battle with her "OCTOPUS": cancer. I held her hand as her troubled breathing
got weaker and weaker and finally ceased. I closed her eyes and she was
gone. Her immediate family, our daughter Glee and her sister, Kay Wiewel,
were present during her final hours to comfort her. Louise was an educator.
She taught Physical Education and Health and Personal Development at West
Vancouver Senior High; Methods of Teaching Physical Education, in the
Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia; English As A
Second Language at John Oliver Secondary School. Her life enriched the lives
of her many students. Louise requested that there be no funeral or memorial
service, no flowers and that she be cremated. On behalf of Louise and her
family I would like to thank Dr. Wayne Smith for his compassion and guidance
as we tried to cope with the complexities of modern medicine. Cancer is an
ugly affliction. If you feel inclined, you can make a donation, in honour of
Louise Devereaux, to be used for research into the cause and treatment of
cancer, so that others can be spared the suffering. Donations should be made
to the BC Cancer Foundation. I miss her. Jack

mainly on the beauty industry. He was an intelligent man with a thirst for
knowledge and understanding. Also a capable craftsman, building four family
homes over the years, three of them in West Vancouver where they lived from
1958 until 1980. He and Mary retired to Langley where they enjoyed the
summers and travelled south to California during the cold wet months. He was
an accomplished golfer and embraced jogging and healthful living long before
they became fashionable. John was active in the Lutheran Church throughout
his whole life and even as his light was growing dim, the memory failing,
and his strength ebbing, his faith remained strong. We thank God for this
man, for the riches he poured into our lives and for the privilege of
calling him dad. Today he will be laid to rest next to his Mary. "Until we
meet again"

McPHERSON - Mercia Hazel October 11, 1913 - March 31, 2008 Mercia McPherson
passed away peacefully at her waterfront home in West Vancouver on March
31st. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Glenn in 1998. Mercia is
survived by her loving children, Heather Mercia Sixta, Marilyn Overland
(Bob), Cathie McPherson, Glenn (Kathleen) and grandchildren Maggie, Kate,
Marcus, Michael, Claudia, Geoffrey, Kelsey, Travis, Wesley, Cody and great
grandchild Ashton Legere. Mercia was the youngest daughter of Tom and Alice
Griffiths, a pioneer family in Revelstoke, B.C. Knowing her future lay
elsewhere, a young and beautiful Mercia headed to the bright lights of
Vancouver where she worked on the Princess cruise line to Alaska and
eventually opened her own business in Vancouver. Mercia had many interests
and passions but it was through a night of dancing at the Commodore Ballroom
that she met Glenn, the love of her life. A chance encounter, a quiet dance
and within weeks, on April 15, 1942, they were married. It really was "love
at first sight". After several years spent living abroad, Mercia and Glenn
returned first to Ottawa and then came west to raise their family in their
wonderful house overlooking Caulfeild Beach in West Van. Mum resided in that
house for 60 years. She loved living by the water and spent years boating
with family and friends on the now aptly named Mer-Away. In 1968, she and
Glenn opened a new chapter in their lives with the building of their unit at
Whistler. She was an institution on the slopes and bought her last Bogner
ski suit at 85, reluctantly hanging up her skis two years later. Mercia's
glass was always 3/4 full and her passion for life, friendship, nature and
travel defined her. The ultimate hostess, she made everyone who came into
her sphere feel special and embraced. A classic beauty until the end, she
was always the Revelstoke girl at heart, practical, down to earth, and
without pretensions. No one will forget her twinkling Griffiths eyes. Mercia
was the glue that held our family together and without question this is the
end of a legend. She will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank
Dr. Leon Bard for his compassionate care of our mother. A celebration of
Mercia's life will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 1:30pm at St.
Francis in the Wood, 4773 South Piccadilly, followed by a reception at the
family home, 4580 Marine Drive, West Vancouver from 3:00 - 8:00PM.

Morgan, Mildred Moran, John Morgan, Craig Morgan, Melvin Morgan, Eugene

Peter and Sophie Jacobs (nee Williams), husband Clarence Henry Morgan and

brought to all of our lives. Connie was born in 1922 on the Tsawwassen First
Nation reserve. After many years away she worked hard to bring her family
back home to Tsawwassen. She overcame many challenges in life, but was
always there for her children. Her beauty, her smile and her love of life
will be in our memories forever. To the living, I am gone, To the sorrowful,
I will never return, To the angry, I was cheated, But to the happy, I am at
peace, And to the faithful, I have never left. I cannot be seen, but I can
be heard. So as you stand upon a shore, gazing at a beautiful sea - Remember
me. As you look in awe at a mighty forest and its grand majesty - Remember
me. As you look upon a flower, and admire its simplicity - Remember me.
Remember me in your heart, your thoughts, and your memories of the times we
loved, the times we cried, the times we fought, the times we laughed. For if
you always think of me, I will have never gone. The Funeral Service was held

Hugh Crothers Murray On March 24th, 2008 our father passed away unexpectedly
while vacationing with family and friends in Palm Springs, California. Dad's
long and accomplished journey began on September 26th, 1921 in Killarney,
Manitoba, the only son of Percy Norman and Margaret (nee Manson) Murray. He
spent his formative years in Manitoba, earning a B.A. from the University of
Manitoba in 1939, followed by an M.A. from the University of Toronto and a
Law degree from Osgoode Hall. In 1948 Dad traveled west and settled in
Vancouver where he practiced law with the firm of Bull, Housser & Tupper for
close to 40 years. During his career he had many achievements, one being a
founding member of the 20 Club, a prestigious group of lawyers who continue
to meet. On February 17th, 1956 Dad married the love of his life, Rhea Doris
Cooper, and within a very short time they welcomed three daughters. Dad
worked tirelessly and selflessly to provide for his family's interests,
especially the horses and stable, and extensive accompanying activities. Our
memories are testament to his honour and dedication. He was also a man of
strong faith, and was very involved with St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church
and continued to support their causes until his death. After Dad retired and
when their children were finally on their own, Mom and Dad enjoyed traveling
to distant places with friends and family. At the age of 79, Dad suffered a
devastating stroke, and we were awestruck by his courage and strength as he
overcame so many obstacles. Hugh is survived by his sisters Mary McTavish,
Eleanor Higham, and Alison (Eugene) Rousset. He also leaves his three
daughters Alison (James Stewart), Christina and Patricia, and his six
grandchildren Mattias, Piers, Torsten, Roan, Mia, and Wilson. Dad was
predeceased by his parents and many friends and colleagues over the years,
but most significant was the loss of his soul mate and life partner Rhea
Murray on July 25th, 2005. The family would like to extend a special
appreciation to those who continued to share Dad's extraordinary wit and
wisdom after Mom died. A service will be held on Friday, April 11th at
2:30pm at St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church, 1022 Nelson Street, Vancouver,
followed by a reception at the Vancouver Club, 915 West Hastings Street. As
he requested, Dad's ashes will be placed alongside those of our mother. For
Whom the Bell Tolls by John Donne No man is an island, Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed
away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As
well as if a manner of thine own Or of thine friend's were. Each man's death
diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, send not to know For
whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.

POISSON HELEN (NEE FERGUSON) February 14, 1911 - March 14, 2008 Helen died
peacefully at home. She is loved and missed by daughters Renee and Therese,
grandchildren Damien and Sarah, brother Douglas, extended family and
friends. She is predeceased by Rodney, her beloved husband of 64 years.
Helen was born in North Bay, Ontario to the Rev. TJS and Amy Ferguson. From
her beginning she had a radiant energy, an enthusiasm, curiosity and zest
for life. Growing up in North Bay, Lanark and Kingston, Ontario, she played
both the piano and the violin, often performing with her family. In 1925 the
family moved to Vernon, BC, where Helen completed high school. She earned
her university fees picking apples in Okanagan orchards and teaching
swimming and diving in Nelson, BC. After completing her BA at UBC, Helen won
a summer scholarship to England to study a new Swedish approach to natural
movement, a method she was to use successfully during her years instructing
physical education in the BC school system. Returning to BC, Helen spent
another year at U.B.C. to get her teacher's certificate and taught high
school physical education and art while completing her M.A. in history. In
1942 she married Rodney Poisson who became a professor of English Literature
at Victoria College (now the University of Victoria). As the wife of a
professor and the mother of two children Helen's fascination with the
scholarly approach led her to become an invaluable researcher and capable
editor of Rodney's academic writing. During the mid '60's, Helen was Dean of
Women at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB, where Rodney was
teaching English Literature. Rodney and Helen's final academic years were in
London, Ontario, where Rodney was Huron College's Dean of Arts . They
retired to Comox, BC in 1979 to enjoy their grandchildren, their friends and
sail their dinghy. Helen was an active member of Courtenay Youth Music
Centre and the University Women's Club. She was a patron of the Amy Ferguson
Institute, a non-profit organization offering educational support to
promising young singers from the Kootenay Valley. At the age of 90,
combining her talents as a letter writer and archivist, Helen wrote and
published "Sing as You Go", a history of her mother Amy's work as
founder/director of the groundbreaking Nelson Boys' Choir. Helen spent her
last two years playing piano, engaging in stimulating conversations, picking
blackberries in her garden, archiving her papers and writing letters to her
friends all over the world. As Helen's daughters we would like to thank the
homecare nurses, doctors, home support workers, hospice volunteers and
friends for helping us take such good care of our mother. Helen asked that
we celebrate her life with a Tea Dance, which will be held at D'Esterre
House, 1801 Beaufort Ave, Comox, on April 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. Everyone is
welcome. She is hoping that we will all dance! In lieu of flowers we would
appreciate donations be made to The Amy Ferguson Institute, 3949 Malina
Road, Nelson, B.C. V1L 6X6.

WILSON (Sarah Olwen) PATRICIA March 14, 1914 - March 11, 2008 It is with
sadness that we announce the passing of Patricia Wilson at Mount Saint
Joseph Hospital, after several months of declining health. Pat was
predeceased by her beloved daughter Melodie in 1987, and more recently by
brothers Reginald and Gordon Hutchings and sister, Iona Chadwick. Patricia
is survived by her granddaughter Iona Stockton, and her loving companion
Walter Gotowiec; there are also nieces and nephews, their families, and many
friends. Cremation took place; there was no funeral service/memorial at
Pat's request. Though born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Patricia was
raised in Quebec. Classes in art, music, dance, literature and drama were
her youthful choices. From 1945, when she arrived in Vancouver, Patricia
worked at making a life for herself in the area of teaching music at the
piano. At first this was for children, creating classes both privately and
in schools, and at a time when school music classes were in their infancy.
Rather an entrepreneur when individuals and women particularly did not
operate independently, Pat was ahead of her time. From 1951 to 1983, she
took an active role in the Vancouver Chapter of the BC Registered Music
Teachers Association. Always with an active interest in other areas of the
arts, Pat was a fan of theatre and concerts. She had been active too as a
dancer, from Ballroom to Round and Square dancing. Always a book in hand,
Pat read on a wide variety of subjects. Friends will recall her charming
sense of humour, and a deep laugh that could wake up a room. Above all,
presenting herself so beautifully (she insisted on being colour co
ordinated), Patricia remained a lady, and there was no doubt that `she
enjoyed being a girl'! In the latter twenty-five years, Patricia became
concerned with piano classes again, and this time for adults, helping so
many of those who had been discouraged or had to quit in their earlier
years, to go back to the keyboard. She approached it in such a way that
adults, really wanting to learn, could find a way to enjoy the piano and
music. She offered a special expertize and touch as well as the required
encouragement! Pat volunteered for many years at the Community Centered
College of the Retired in Burnaby in order to carry out her belief that
adults could learn to play and enjoy music at the piano. Receiving accolades
for her work in this role, Patricia truly exemplified the motto, to Learn
for Fun and Teach for Pleasure. A role model who chose to encourage, not
judge, Patricia Wilson, in both her professional and personal life, touched
the lives of many people. To celebrate her life,Tea and Tributes will be
offered on Friday afternoon, April 11 from 2 to 4 pm at the Alan Emmott
Centre at 6650 at Southoaks Crescent in Burnaby. (This is also known as The
Community Centered College of the Retired) Please come with your stories and
memories.
