BEVIS, Herbert (Bert) William July 16, 1932 April 2, 2008 It is with immense
sadness that we announce the sudden passing of a deeply loved husband,
father, grandfather and friend. Bert is survived by his loving wife of 41
years, Mona, son Michael (Siobhan), daughter Cassandra (Bradley) and
granddaughters Gabrielle and Pascale. Only son of Bert Sr. and Florence
Bevis, Bert Jr. was raised in the Tottenham neighbourhood of London, England
(come on you Spurs!). As a young schoolboy during WWII, he was evacuated to
Bournemouth during the Blitz. His favourite memory of this experience was of
his back against the wall, defending his London honour (his long pants vs.
the short pants of his new school mates). As a young man, Bert became a
London cabbie, taking great pride in gaining The Knowledge" of London during
his training. Some of his more memorable fares included Charlie Chaplin and
Sir Winston Churchill. Bert had a love of travel, taking him to various
countries including Spain, France, Italy, and ultimately to Canada. Landing
in Quebec with two fellow Londoners, the three worked and drove their way
across Canada. He settled in Vancouver in the early 1960's where he began
his distinguished career in the restaurant industry. Bert worked at Hy's
Steakhouse (at the Sand's) as a busboy, then waiter and then transferred to
Victoria in 1964 as headwaiter for the newly opened Hy's. Shortly afterwards
Bert was promoted to manager of the restaurant where he successfully ran it
until his retirement in 1983, making many life-long friends along the way.
Like family, close friends were very important to him. In 1965, at a going
away party for a friend, he met the love of his life, Mona. Their first date
began with golf at the Cowichan Golf Club and finished with dinner at the
Dingle House. Married at the Oak Bay United Church in October 1966, they
honeymooned in Hawaii, a destination that became a family favourite. Besides
Hawaii, Bert also dragged" his family on other vacations including Greece,
Italy, Florida, California, the Caribbean and his hometown of London. Once
their children were grown, Bert and Mona's travels included Hong Kong,
China, Singapore, Alaska, California, Arizona, Mexico, Nevada, a memorable
train trip across Canada and their 40th anniversary in Tofino where Mona,
ring in hand, turned the tables and asked Bert to marry her all over again.
Bert lived his life with gusto. This included trying to ski the near
impossible peak to parking-lot run on Grouse Mountain (broken collarbone);
coasting a jeep down Haleakala (post sunrise, no gas); and taking a
helicopter to the Mendenhall Glacier (terrified wife). An avid golfer at
Uplands, his notable achievements included two holes in one and in 1995 he
was Uplands' Cup Winner, Club Handicap Champion and Golfer of the Year. Bert
especially enjoyed the Sunday morning honey-pot, Thursday Stags and in later
years, chose to lose his money at the 19th hole playing Lambsie. His sharp
wit, sense of humour and love of storytelling will be missed. Bert's family
would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Richmond Pavilion,
1st floor, Dr. Gary Nielsen and Dr. James Piercey for their care and
compassion. A celebration of Bert's life will be held at Uplands Golf Club
on Sunday, April 20, 2008 from 1 to 3pm. In lieu of flowers, please make
yourself a dry martini with an olive and make a donation to a charity of
your choice. 458248
