DANEAU, Jean Paul (J.P.) `Papa' October 5, 1938 October 22, 2008 Due to
complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, we lost our dear
Papa on Wednesday, October 22, 2008. For more than 30 years, he was known
and loved by countless people in the Langford area. He was known as
`Frenchie' by the customers of Langford Building Supply and Cubbon Building
Centre until he retired. Always willing to help out, he was a wonderful
friend to many. If there was something that had to be done, he could do it
or knew somebody who could do it. His kindness knew no bounds. He enjoyed
fishing in younger years and was one of the founding members of the weekly
crib game at the Langford branch of the Royal Canadian legion. In the recent
past, he spent many days plugging the slot machines at the View Royal
Casino. He was the world's best husband and greatest Dad to his family. If
it meant getting up at 5.30 in the morning for a hockey practice or being
the designated driver for a company Christmas party; he was there for us and
willing to help out. His pride and joy was his youngest granddaughter,
Haley; he talked about her to anyone who would listen. He is survived by his
wife, Elsie and children Diane Fru (Rod), Sue Cavanagh (Chuck) Gordon
Pollock, Randall Pollock, Kathryn Mills, Bonnie Wallis, Debbie England
(Don), Darryl Pollock (Lisa) with 17 grandchildren and numerous great
grandchildren. A celebration of J.P.'s life will take place at the Legion
Hall on Station Road in Langford on Thursday November 6, 2008 at 2 p.m.

MITCHELL, Roy James (Jim) May 12 1922 October 25, 2008 Jim much loved
husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away after a
brief but valiant struggle with cancer. His memory will live on in the
hearts of Olivia, his cherished wife of fifty eight years, his beloved
children (and their partners) Rozlynne (Graham), Steve, and Peter (Mette),
his wonderful grandchildren Jerry, Jason and Jennifer, his loving brother
Glen and sister-in-law Doreen, his adored cousins, nieces and nephews and

or Mitch" as he was sometimes called was born and bred in Vancouver, BC, and
with Olivia and his three children lived in Burnaby and Coquitlam in the
early years and in West Vancouver for the later majority of his life before

and the kind of man that made friends easily and kept them for a lifetime.
The world had for a time a wise and wonderful man, a great inspiration and a
true friend he would not want to be remembered with sadness but with joy,
full of the awe and wonder at life, and the memories of a long and
wonderfully lived life. His family welcomes all those who knew him to join

NEWSOME, Emma Mary (Wahl) February 11, 1925 October 25, 2008 It is with
profound sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom on October 25, 2008
at the age of 83. Emma was predeceased by her husband Thomas, parents
Eisdach and Elizabeth Wahl, her twin sister Hilda and her brothers Bill,
Otto, Edward and her grandchild Alicia. Mom passed away suddenly but
peacefully with her devoted son Glenn by her side. She will be sadly missed
by sons Richard, Glenn, Bill, David (Marnie), grandchildren April, Michael,
Jennifer, Andrea, Leah, Alyse, Kathleen, Victoria, Mark and Cora Lee, her
great-grandchildren Grace, Lucas and JJ, her brother Gene (Joan),
sisters-in-law Adele and Sybil, cousin Eleanor, many nieces and nephews and
her special friends Tillie, Mary and Phyllis. Mom was able to enjoy over 30
wonderful years of watching her grandchildren grow up and the birth of three
great grandchildren. Mom's family immigrated to Canada from Russia in 1924.
Prior to leaving Russia the family experienced the loss of son Alexander and
daughter Rosa. They sailed from Riga to London and from London on to
Halifax. After a long train ride they settled in Tramping Lake,
Saskatchewan. Mom and her twin sister Hilda were born there in 1925 and five
years later, in 1930, the family moved to Kelowna. Mom graduated from high
school in Kelowna and arrived in her beloved Victoria in 1943 to attend
nursing school at St. Joseph's Hospital. In 1945 she met Thomas Newsome and
they were married in Kelowna on May 25, 1948. While raising a family Mom
worked at the provincial government starting in 1964 with the Department of
Education and finally with the Motor Vehicle Branch until she retired in
1988. Mom never called it retirement she liked to refer to it as the golden
handshake. Mom never sat idle. She was a member of the Insurance Women's
Group, a very active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and St.
Andrew's Cathedral. Through these organizations Mom was able to be part of
support groups helping those less fortunate in our community. Mom was very
proud to be part of these groups who gave so selflessly of their time. Mom's
greatest rewards were her sons, grandchildren, great grandchildren, the
people she met and the friendships she made. Our family would like to thank
Mom's doctor, Dr. Judith Jones and receptionist Caroline for their special
care over the years. A special thank you also goes out to the doctors and
nurses at the Jubilee Hospital. There will be a memorial service to
celebrate Emma's life on November 4, 2008, 2:00 p.m. at First Memorial
Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, B.C.. In lieu of flowers,
Mom has requested donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society
or the Victoria Hospice 509575

PASK, Charles Anthony (Tony) January 19th, 1958 October 26th, 2008 Shawnigan
Lake, BC Always one for adventure, Tony went on the road at 16 leaving
Shelburne, NS, and crossing the country to fish off Prince Rupert. Returning
to Nova Scotia, he worked odd jobs before joining the Navy. This launched a
25+year career that allowed him to travel the world from Alaska to San
Francisco, Japan and Dubai as well as three tours of the Persian Gulf,
gathering a wealth of friends and stories along the way. Everything was fair
game for discussion, from politics and philosophy to the Montreal Canadiens'
Stanley Cup chances or the New York Yankees' pitching prospects. Retiring as
Chief Petty Officer, Tony had more time to play golf, which he enjoyed more
for the camaraderie than the score. Ever up for a good debate (or crib or
Scrabble), he loved to entertain friends and family with his legendary
pastas, spiced with wit and washed down with liberal amounts of Pask-made
vino or Captain Morgan. Tony prized good conversation, good books and good
food, but above all, his family: Danni, Alex, and Mitchell, as well as
family and friends from the East to the West Coast who will never forget
him. No service will be held at Tony's request. In lieu of flowers, please
donate to the Cancer Society. A toast to Tony will take place at 413 Viaduct
Ave West, Victoria, this Saturday, Nov. 1, at 3pm. BYOB. 509316

PATTERSON, Flora Peace McMaster June 28, 1919 August 7, 2008 Flo was born in
the old Alberni, B.C. to James and Flora Scott of Kildonan, B.C. She was
proud of her name, Peace. The Treaty of Versailles, officially ending WWI,
was signed on the day she was born. She attended school in Kildonan and
Victoria (Oaklands, Vic High). In 1939, she married Robert D. Patterson of
New Westminster. They lived in Vancouver and Victoria, eventually building
their home in 1950, on Midgard Avenue, Saanich. Flo cared for her family,
worked part-time at The Bay and later at the UVic cafeteria. She enjoyed
music and dancing and loved to entertain friends and family in her home.
This often included singing and the occasional Highland Schottische with her
sister, Mary, and sometimes ended with watching sunrise over bacon and eggs.
Flo and Rob travelled to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii and across Canada to visit
or travel with family. She lived in her own home for almost 58 years, moved
into care for the last 3 months of her life and died at Glengarry Hospital.
