BRISBANE, Margaret Wilma (nee McQueen) (1937 2008) Margaret passed away
peacefully on August 30th, 2008 at the James Bay Care Centre in Victoria,
British Columbia, Canada. She was born on October 16th, 1937 in Vancouver,
British Columbia, Canada. Margaret is survived by her husband, Ernest; her
sons, Craig and Ross, her daughter-in-law, Lisa; and her granddaughter,
Charlotte. She will be missed by many relatives and friends, in particular,
her brother and sisterin-law, Robert and Joyce McQueen. Margaret's love of
life was only exceeded by her love and devotion to her family and friends.
During her youth, this love for her family took her to places such as
Vancouver, Winnipeg Manitoba, Port Alice and Oyster Bay, on Vancouver
Island. After graduation in Port Alice, she moved with her mother and sister
to Fruitvale, BC. It was during her time in Fruitvale that Margaret
developed her love of fashion working in Gray's Fashion First ladies
clothing store in Trail. In 1960, Margaret moved to Alloa, Scotland with her
mother, Florence McQueen, for a yearlong visit with her grandmother, whom
she had never met. It was during this trip that Margaret first met her
future husband, Ernie. After Ernie's immigration to Canada, they were
married on February 8th, 1969 in Burnaby, BC. Margaret's first home as a
married woman was in Fraser Lake. Before moving to what Margaret considered
her hometown of Williams Lake, she gave birth to her first son, Craig, in
January of 1970 in Vanderhoof and then her second son, Ross, in June of 1971
in Powell River. Upon her arrival in Williams Lake, Margaret soon became
involved in the community through her work with the United Church, the
Parent Teacher's Association and the Williams Lake Lioness Club. It was
through this work that Margaret made many lifelong friends. Her support of
her family and their diverse interests such as Scouts Canada, minor soccer,
fishing, hockey and gardening kept her very busy and cemented her love of
the Cariboo region of BC. She was well known in the community for her
outstanding baking and won prizes at the local fair for her ability to grow
monster tomatoes and giant sweet peas. In 1989 Margaret left Canada with
Ernie to live and work for two years in Chile. During the next fourteen
years they lived, worked, and vacationed all over the world in diverse
places such as Florida, England, Portugal, Greece, Scotland, Athabasca,
Vancouver, Singapore, Malaysia, Borneo, Australia, and Georgia. Margaret's
experiences during this period were wide ranging and varied, such as
sweeping scorpions out of her living room, appreciating the peacefulness of
the west highlands of Scotland, riding the Big Thunder Mountain roller
coaster, and evacuating a dictatorship during a coup. In 2003, Margaret and
Ernie's world travelling slowed down and they moved back to Richmond, BC
before moving in 2005 to join Craig, Ross and Lisa in Victoria. During
Margaret's final years in Victoria she enjoyed the close contact with her
family and the arrival of her first grandchild, Charlotte Ann. Margaret felt
that her life had come full circle as she spent much of her youth on
Vancouver Island, had travelled the world, and was now back on Vancouver
Island enjoying the beauty of Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula. Margaret
will always be remembered for her loyalty, kindness and grace. A memorial
service will be held on Saturday September 6th, 2008 at 2:00 pm, at the
Royal Oak Burial Park, 4673 Falaise Drive, Victoria, B.C. Online condolences
may be offered at Donations to the Parkinson's
Society of BC would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. 496839

STEVENSON, Joan (nee McCandless) In Mt Tolmie Hospital, September 2, 2008,
after a lengthy period following a stroke. Joan was born in Nanaimo in 1937,
attending school in Smithers, Kamloops, Clinton, Port Alberni and Victoria.
Following high school graduation, Joan joined the RCAF in physical training
as a recreational specialist, a skill she took as recreation officer to
Essondale; later she began a career with Corrections Canada at Oakalla
before moving to Kingston, then became the first woman Classification
Officer at the BC Penitentiary in New Westminster. In 1968 she married Kyle
Stevenson, a BC parole officer who was later appointed to the National
Parole Board. They lived on Gabriola Island. Following Kyle's death, Joan
designed and built her own home and studio on Gabriola. Highly artistic and
starting with framed felt animals, Joan went on to create magnificent
wildlife animals in synthetic fur, sculpting heads and bodies that are
utterly realistic. She became noted for her work through support by the
Growlies of Scotland and from client stores and customers in several
countries. Joan sculpted a range of animals from raccoons, bear cubs, otters
and penguins to her finest, a four-foot white tiger. Examples of her fine
work can be found in her book of photographs, The Wildlife Sculptures of
Joan Stevenson (Trafford, 2004, listed on www.trafford.com ). Joan is
survived by her mother Stella Jenkins (nee Cuming), an early graduate of St.
Margarets, brothers David, Henry, Robert, John and Richard McCandless and
Mark Smith, and by nieces and nephews Anne, Ian, Kevin, Catherine and
Lawrence McCandless, and cousins Cynthia Bagshaw and Monty Furber. The
family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of Mt. Tolmie for their wonderful
caring of Joan, especially in her last days. A celebration of Joan's life
and accomplishments will be held in McCall's Family Chapel, Johnson &
Vancouver Streets at 11:00 am Saturday September 6, 2008. Condolences may be
offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com . 497352

TILLY, Heinz Ernst Paul The family of Heinz Tilly wishes to advise family
and friends of his death on August 31, 2008 at Victoria General Hospital. He
suffered a stroke on August 16 and had been hospitalized since then. Heinz
is survived by his beloved wife Renate Wuersch-Tilly; daughters Angela
Wuersch-Gowryluk of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Martina Wuersch of Oakland,
California; son James Tilly of Winnipeg; grandchildren Renate, Laura,
Alexander, and Alexis WuerschGowryluk of Winnipeg; sister Marion Fingerhuth
of An der Gulichsburg, Germany; cousins Dorit Lossau of Hamburg, Germany and
Horst Peter of Uetersen, Germany; several nieces and nephews; and many
friends. He was predeceased by his parents Paul and Anna in 1971 and 1989
respectively, by his brother Friedhelm in 1979, and by his sister Lore in
2005. Born on August 7, 1935, Heinz grew up in Hamburg, Germany. He would
reminisce happily about his days there as a policeman, tradesman, and
seafarer, but he had a special fondness for his children and grandchildren.
He moved to Canada in 1956, arriving in Quebec City on the M.S. Arosa Sun".
In 1969, he met his wife Renate in Winnipeg. There, as an intensely proud
Canadian, he worked as a master cabinetmaker and construction foreman. A
highlight was constructing the building that now houses the famous Hudson
Bay Company ship Nonsuch". He and Renate moved to Sooke, British Columbia in
1991, where he operated a cabinetmaking shop alongside their bed and
breakfast. After retiring in 2003, his health began to decline. Even then,
he continued to be a loving husband, father, and grandfather always in good
humour, warm hearted, and very generous. He still loved to have fun. The
family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Victoria General
Hospital for their care and kindness to Heinz during his brief stay. Funeral
arrangements are pending. Should friends desire, donations may be made in
his memory to a heart or stroke foundation of their choice. 496742
