ANDERSON, Harold Gordon It is with great sadness that we announce the
peaceful passing of our father and grandfather on Monday, September 29th,
2008. Harold was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 26th 1915 to
Catherine Wilhelmina and Hubert George Anderson, but grew up and considered
Victoria his home. He enjoyed telling many stories of the history of
Victoria which he was part of, including the bath houses and swimming in the
Gorge, as well as skating on Portage Inlet. He joined the Army at a very
young age, and retired after 25 years of service. He then worked happily at
Alf Becker and Son for the next 10 years. Upon his retirement from Fort Rodd
Hill as an Interpretations Officer, Harold was able to enjoy his many
hobbies which included hiking and spending time in the outdoors. His passion
for trains lead him on many trips up the Fraser Canyon and to the spiral
tunnels. Harold is loved and will be missed by his daughters Barbara Jensen
(grandchildren Beth, Amy, and Rob), Patricia Zukowski (husband John,
grandchildren Angela and Jeff), and Myrna Bennett (grandsons Dale and
David), as well as his great grandchildren, sisters Lil Williams and Elsie
Stancil, his niece, and nephews. Harold was predeceased by his first wife,
Joan of 27 years and wife Ada of 25 years. Many thanks to Dr. Paul Nehra and
the staff at Luther Court for their kind and compassionate care. A memorial
service to celebrate the life of Harold will be held at Sands Chapel, 1803
Quadra St. on Wednesday, October 8th at 1PM with a reception to follow. In
lieu of flowers, Harold would have appreciated donations being made in his

KNIGHT Dr. Harold (Hal) Arthur Walter 1922 2008 Hal was born in Calgary,
Alberta and grew up in a family involved in cattle ranching, coal mining and
operating general stores throughout the province. In 1942 he enlisted in the
Canadian Merchant Marine and saw service along the west coast of the United
States and Canada. Hal transferred to the RCAF in 1944 and into the Canadian
Army in 1945. After the war Hal's interest in farming took him to UBC and a
degree in soil science which led to work with the Federal Ministry of
Forests. Now married to Lorna, Hal embarked on academic studies which saw
him earn a Masters Degree in Forestry (UBC), a PhD in Forestry (Seattle) and
a Masters Degree in Economics (UVic). The focus of Hal's life became the
practical applications of environmental research and work in the field of
renewable resources. He literally devoted his life to these goals, serving
eight years as a trustee and chairman of School District 61. Following he
served seven years as an alderman with the Municipality of Saanich. In his
service on the Board of Directors of Camosun College he did more than any
other person to bring the college into its present status as one of our
leading facilities for advanced education. He talked about the need for
recycling before people knew the meaning of the word and his proudest
achievement was to see it grow from an idea to the massive success it is
today. Hal's other passion in life was music and the collection of art,
sculpture and books from around the world. He and his wife have established
a number of bursaries at UVic and Camosun College and very generously
supported many music, art and cultural programs, both in Victoria and
throughout the country. Although eventually "retiring " to his small
Glendenning Road berry farm, Hal supported and served dozens of associations
and causes, both locally and around the world. In 2003 he was presented with
the Environmental Achievement Award by the Municipality of Saanich,
recognizing 25 years of service. Hal was predeceased by his wife, Lorna and
his brother, Hugh and is survived by his sister, Muriel, and his cousins,
Tom Orr-Loney and Richard Loney. Thank you to the staff at Luther Court for
taking good care of Hal during his stay with you, and thank you to his very
special friends and neighbours, Barry and Dawn Loukes, Jack and Marguerite
McLellan and Ed and Suzie Polinsky for taking care of Hal while he lived on
Glendenning Road. A remembrance service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on
November 8, 2008 at the Faculty Club at UVic. In lieu of flowers, donations
can be made in his memory to the Harold & Lorna Knight Music Bursary or the
Eco-System Bursary, University of Victoria, Development Office, PO Box 3060

NICOLL, Thomas Dickson With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Thomas
Dickson Nicoll at the age of 77. Born in Winnipeg on May 25, 1931, Tom
passed away at Victoria's Royal Jubilee Hospital on Friday, September 26,
2008. Our wonderful father will be missed and remembered fondly by his wife
Jean, son Michael, daughters Brenda (Mike Ridgway), Jennifer (Darren
Donnelly), Carole and grandchildren Emma, Carolyn, Teddy and Mirella. He is
survived by his brother James (Gladys), stepmother Joan, nephew Jim (Linda)
and numerous cousins in Manitoba and Scotland. Tom was a popular graphic
arts and social studies teacher to many students at Delta and South Delta
Secondary Schools. He was a grassroots political activist and was dedicated
to improving the public school system while standing up for the rights of
teachers. His sharp wit and sense of humour remained to the very end. Tom
was very clear-minded and very much in charge of the events that marked his
passing. Following a massive heart attack that damaged much of his heart, he
said goodbyes and appreciations to all of his family, then directed the
medical team to stop the medications that were maintaining his otherwise
incapable heart muscles. He then fell asleepawakening a few hours later, his
first words were Why am I still here? I thought you turned off the
medications!" Turning to the head cardiologist and his team of young
residents, he remarked, I want my money back!" As he did in life, so he did
in dying. Tom was a talented artist, history buff, Scottish pipe band
drummer and photographer. Dad rediscovered his love of painting and proudly
held an art exhibition in Nanaimo in 2007. He was also an avid sports fan
and rarely missed Vancouver Canucks or B.C. Lions games. Our family wishes
to express our gratitude to the staff of the Coronary Care Unit of Royal
Jubilee Hospital for their compassionate care and kind support. No service
will be performed by Tom's request. A private family gathering will be held
at a later date. Donations may be made to the B.C. Heart and Stroke
