CLEMENS, Eric George July 1, 1938 October 6, 2008 Peacefully, after a
9-month struggle with cancer, Eric, our beloved brother and uncle, breathed
his last breath on October 6 in Victoria, BC. Eric leaves to mourn brother
Paul (Carole) (Hornby Island), sisters Val (Winnipeg) and Lenore
(Vancouver), niece Kristiana, and nephews Jeremy and Noah. Kristiana's
mother Pam also remained a valued friend. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Eric
lived and worked in London, England; Ames, Iowa; Ottawa; and finally
Victoria, the city he loved best. Eric obtained several degrees, which
charted his career path from architecture to public administration,
teaching, research and publication: Bachelor of Architecture, Master of
Architecture and Urban Design, and Master of Public Administration. Eric had
been co-authoring a book with UVic colleague Bob Bish. Despite recurring
physical weakness, Eric managed to complete his part in the project within
the last two weeks of his life. This determination to fulfil an obligation
was characteristic of Eric, as were his loyalty to family and friends, his
concern for their well-being, his integrity, his good will, and his
spiritual faith. He will be greatly missed. Having spent the first ten years
of his life in Winnipeg's mainly-Icelandic West End, Eric was the one who
kept us connected with our Icelandic roots. He took our mother (Amma) to
Iceland in 1991 and organized a wonderful 'clan gathering' of six to visit
relatives there in 2005. He was an active member of the Icelandic Club of
Victoria. Eric enjoyed some physical respite in the summer, when he visited
family and friends in Victoria and on the islands. Thanks to all for their
hospitality. Thanks also to the many folks who expressed their care and
concern for Eric during this difficult time. The family also wishes to thank
the staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospice for their kind and attentive care in
his last hours. Many thanks as well to colleague Evert Lindquist for his
invaluable help in arranging the memorial gathering. We are deeply grateful
to friend Joan Young for her stalwart support of Eric throughout his
illness. The gathering will be held on Saturday, October 18, at 1:00 p.m. in
the Fireplace Lounge, University Club, University of Victoria (parking lots
9 or 10). In lieu of flowers, donations in Eric's memory may be made to a
charity of choice. For further information contact 250-721-8055 506337

PELTER, Raynell July 9, 1926 October 9, 2008 It is with saddened hearts that
the family reports Raynell lost her long struggle with ailing health on
October 9, 2008. Born July 9, 1926 at Lumby, BC, the eldest of six siblings,
she is survived by her husband Al of 54 years; sons Brent and Clark
(Corinna); daughter Sharla (Chris); brothers Dale, Alex (Bev), Heath
(Shirley); sisters Sharie and Jet (Danny); one aunt and numerous nieces,
nephews and cousins. An independent thinker, Raynell was a believer in the
merits of work, in earlier years as an employee in a plywood plant as well
as a distillery in Vancouver to allow attendance at normal school. Artistic
in nature, she found early expression of this in painting, later in design
and care of her gardens, and more lately in design and customizing of
greeting cards without use of computers. She was recognized as an excellent
elementary school teacher, and increased her qualifications by achieving her
BEd degree in remedial teaching in 1981. Unfortunately recurring health
problems prevented her from pursuing this as she would have liked. Amongst
her loves were: firstly her family, her friends, cats and dogs, gardening,
and young people. Amongst the treasures she leaves for each of her children
are personal albums with stories significant in their rise to adulthood. And
not to be left out was the independence she enjoyed behind the wheel of her
car, especially when on a shopping venture looking for irresistible"
bargains. Chauncey" her present Springer Spaniel is her third dog of that
breed, and like all her others, much loved and admired. Regardless of her
work schedules and responsibilities, she always felt the old fashioned
pantry" should contain a wide selection of preserves, and in the past was
always well stocked for the enjoyment of family and many friends. She had a
presence" which was recognized and will be missed by all that knew her. A
celebration of Raynell's life will be held on Friday, October 17 at 1:00
from First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. In
lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital
Foundation, the BCSPCA, or the charity of your choice. Special thanks are
extended to Corinna Templeton, the Vancouver Island Health Authority and
Beacon Community Services for the home care provided, and to Mount Newton
Services and the Red Cross for the provision of equipment to make her final
days as comfortable as possible. 505988
