BRADLEY, David It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful
passing of David Bradley on February 20th at the age of 64. Dad was
born in Bolton, England on May 21st, 1944. Dad loved his bike and
spent much of his youth cycling around England with his friends. In
1967 David married his sweetheart Renee and immigrated to Canada where
they settled in Birds Hill, Winnipeg. Originally trained as a
draughtsman David worked first at the CNR and later as a machinist at
the Manitoba Cancer Foundation. When he moved to Victoria he worked at
the Victoria Cancer Center. He also worked at the Goldstream Ubrew
with his friend Terry and had good laughs and great times. He made
countless friends and fond memories at all of these places. In 2006 he
retired to build a house in Kelowna. David loved to work with his
hands. He was skilled at designing and building and used his
creativity when solving a problem. He especially loved the outdoors
and could often be found outside cheerfully tackling whatever chore
needed to be done without complaint. Dads last year was made special
by the wonderful neighbours, family and friends who gave generously of
their help and love. He was a wonderful father and a loving husband.
He was greatly respected for his kindness, generosity and friendship
and will be missed by all that knew him. David will be terribly missed
by his wife Renee, his children Andrew (Caillin) and Gillian (Darren),
granddaughters Gracie and Gabrielle. In England, sister Irene and
brother in law Michael, nephews Martin (Debbie), Adrian, David
(Nicola), niece Katy, brother in law John (Sylvia), nephew Richard
(Ruth) Sam, Lily and Jack, niece Elizabeth (Pete) and mother in law
Bessie Hall. The list of friends is too numerous to mention but please
know that all of you are special. The family would like to send a
heartfelt thanks to Rita and Terry and the staff of Victoria Hospice
care. At Dads request, no funeral services will be held. A tea to
celebrate Dad's life will take place Wednesday, Feb 25th at First
Memorial Funeral Services at 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria B.C. from
2:00pm-4:00pm. All friends and family are welcome. In lieu of flowers,
donations to the World Wildlife Fund would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the memories, we love you always. 527912

RAMSAY, Francis Watson February 11, 1931 February 15, 2009 An
honorable, caring, private individual. Frank passed away suddenly and
quietly sometime Sunday leaving a stunned family to deal with the
loss. Frank was born Francis Watson Ramsay in South Shields, England
the youngest of three boys. At tender ages the three brothers were
sent to the countryside to avoid the direct bombings of cities and
villages by the Germans. The families were given little or no warning
that these children were to be taken to railways and bus stations
where people would be waiting to take them to their new homes. Frank
and his two brothers were separated almost immediately never seeing
each other until their return home 50 years later. Much of his story
during this time has been lost or forgotten. During Frank's service as
an ensign in the British Army while serving under Field Marshall
Montgomery, Frank was given personal citations signed by the Field
Marshall. It was then we believe Frank's personal credo became
'service beyond the call of duty'. Frank became an employee of the
Royal Mail Lines sailing from England to far flung areas. It was on
one of these crossings from England to Argentina where he met Freda
Milburn, the delight of his life. Frank married his sweetheart in
England on February 19, 1955. They then left immediately for Canada,
arriving in Nanaimo, B.C. where he commenced working for Blackball
Ferries. When Premier W.A.C. Bennett announced the formation of the
B.C. Ferries Corporation in 1960, Frank was hired as terminal manager
at Swartz Bay. There he was instrumental in setting up the various
office departments and terminal operations including ship schedules
and catering facilities. Within the next few years Frank consistently
rose in the ranks becoming the General Manager of the British Columbia
Ferry Corporation and eventually retiring in 1987. After retirement
Frank and Freda turned their energies to community, friends, family
and future generations. Freda passed away October 28, 2002, leaving a
permanent void in Frank's life. He has now left this void in the lives
of his survivors. Frank leaves behind his two older brothers, Allan
(Connie) and Warwick(Carrie) and sons Glenn, Gary, and daughter
Juanita; his grandchildren: Jody, Chelsea, Randi Leigh, Sean,
Genevieve, Sarah Jane and Natasha. Also great grandsons Brenden,
Lucas, and Isaiah. Celebration of Life will be held at the First
Unitarian Church at 5575 W. Saanich Rd. Tuesday February 24, 2009 at
1:00 pm. Due to Frank's love of flowers guests are requested to bring
a fresh flower to be placed in a memorial bowyer and pictures for a
memory table. Limited parking please arrange your carpool. The
afterflow of a good long relationship is like the light of the star
that keeps pulsing long after the star itself has been extinguished.
It may not make your wishes come true but it lightens your way. 527405

STERLING, James Eldon Jim passed away Feb. 19, 2009 after 76 long and
fun years. Jim was born in Calgary on April 9, 1932 to Esther and Joe
Sterling and grew up with siblings Judy and Bill. In Calgary Jim met
and fell in love with his wife and best friend of more than 50 years,
Judy Clark, and together the couple created their own family with
their kids Ken and Karen. Jim loved living in Calgary and never missed
a football game or the Calgary Stampede. Jim and Judy loved to get
together with their best friends to drink a little (lot) of beer and
just enjoy life. After leaving Calgary, the family lived in Sherwood
Park and St. Albert. Jim and Judy "retired" to Duncan, BC where they
met many wonderful new friends. Retirement was busy with most summers
spent in Port Renfrew fishing and catching "that really big fish, the
ones that didn't get away" and traveling through the interior of BC
and Vancouver Island, and many other parts of Canada. Winter was
snowbird time, down the US West Coast in their 5th wheel and mini van
or to warm places like Mexico and Cuba. Three years ago they made the
move into Victoria where they purchased a beautiful condo on the inner
harbor. Jim combined a playful fun spirit with a successful business
career with Calgary Power/TransAlta Utilities where he worked for 36
years. Some of Jim's first years with Calgary Power were spent
supervising the construction of transmission lines to the oilfields
around Drayton Valley. As Calgary Power became Trans Alta Utilities,
Jim moved to first work in the Edmonton office and then became
Division Manager in St. Albert. One of his first responsibilities was
overseeing the construction of the new St. Albert Office and other
regional offices. Jim managed the St. Albert division of TransAlta
Utilities from 1975 until his retirement in 1991. Jim was a well
respected and active member of the communities around him, donating
his time and business expertise and holding many significant titles in
the organizations he believed in. In Sherwood Park Jim was President
of the Wye community association. In St. Albert he donated his time to
Junior Achievement, to the Northern Alberta Heritage Trail, and was a
member of the Chamber of Commerce. Jim was particularly proud of the
many positions he held over his 18 year tenure on the Board of
Directors of the Hydro Saving and Credit Union. Jim was involved with
the Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (ASET) from the
beginning as Calgary Chapter President, then Alberta President and
member of the Board of Directors, Canadian Council. The respect of his
peers and community was demonstrated at his well attended retirement
party in St. Albert in 1991. Jim was truly unforgettable and touched
many lives in his time with us. He will be deeply missed by all his
family members, his sister Judy (Ray) Habermehl, his wife Judy, his
daughter Karen and his son Ken who has always held his dad as his role
model. At Jim's request there will not be a formal funeral service.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory
of Jim Sterling to either the Alzheimer Society ( www.alzheimers.ca )
or the Canadian Cancer Society ( www.cancer.ca ). 527971

VEITCH, Gladys (Gladdie aka "the Gladster ") August 22, 1912 ~
February 19, 2009 Passed away peacefully in her 97th year. She was
predeceased by her husband Bob and her son Donald (Don) Proven. She is
survived by her companion Charlie Plewman and her daughter Margaret
(Darcy) Corregan. Also left to celebrate her life are: daughter-in-law
Grace Louise, her four grandchildren (Diane, Heather, John, Tanis and
spouses) and many great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews,
most especially Catherine (Murray) Cormack, Joyce Bowman, Louise
(Rick) Routledge and Ron Cormack and many, many friends. Also very
special in Glad's life were all the members of the Bruce Hutchison
clan: Robert and Cory, Jim and Stef, Jane and Gary, Richard and Linda;
and Ross and Sharon Meek. Gladys lived a big life and had a great
impact on so many. She grew up on a farm in Alexander, Manitoba, the
tenth of eleven children. Often she entertained us with stories of her
life in those early years, during the depression and through the war
years. She had a terrific memory and was a great observer and
chronicler of life around her. In her early 20's she received her
nursing degree and enjoyed a career in that field for several years
working in Flin Flon, Brandon and Winnipeg. When she met Bob Veitch
she left nursing and became a mother and homemaker and honed her
fabulous cooking skills. She enjoyed summers at Longbow Lake (Kenora,
Ont) where she excelled in fishing and instilled a fervant love of
nature in those close to her. After Bob died in 1968 Gladdie decided
she 'needed to be needed' and for many years went on to be a
housekeeper/ caregiver for several families. Many of those folks
became like 'family' to her and she was loved and admired and did so
in return. In her 80's, when she finally started to slow down, life
had another gift for her. She met Charlie who became her beloved
companion for the last chapter of her life. They enjoyed evenings of
Scrabble, Bridge and engrossing conversation and often could be found
just sitting in quiet contemplation holding hands. Up to the end
Charlie made sure that Glad always had a single red rose ~ a reminder
of what they shared. Over the last few years Gladys and Charlie
enjoyed making their home at the Alexander Mackie Lodge where they
made more good friends and experienced excellent care and attention
(especially from Susan and Maureen). A very special woman, mother and
partner, the Gladster will be remembered for, among other things, her
wry sense of humour, feisty spirit, strength of character, tenacity,
intelligence and loyality. A very special thank you to Dr. Dan
O'Connell who took such special loving care of Gladys throughout the
years; a big hug for our friend Fiona; and gratitude to Dr. John
Fletcher and nurses Daria, Cindy and Marcy and all staff involved (VGH
6N) for their expertise and kindness in her final days. At the
family's request no service will be held at this time. In lieu of
flowers and in remembrance of Gladdie it would be swell if you would
plant a tree or, if you wish, donate to a charity of your choice. The
S.P.C.A. was her favourite. "Life is not a journey to the grave with
the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather
to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly
proclaiming, Whoa what a Rlde! " 528008
