CONLIN Ralph H. September 10, 1918 - February 8, 2009 Passed away
peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital in his 91st year. Survived by
Daphne, his loving wife of 65 years, his sister, Dorothy Stevenson in
Regina, daughter Carol (Ed) Chanter in Prince George and son Gordon
(Cecilia) Conlin in Mississauga. Lovingly remembered by his four
grandchildren: Christopher and Julia Chanter and John and David
Conlin. And of course, his beloved cat, Hypes. Ralph's life is truly
one to be celebrated. He was a child of the Great Depression, raised
on a farm near Regina by Herbert and Gertrude Conlin. Like so many
prairie men, he enlisted in the Canadian Navy as a lieutenant in World
War II and travelled to the Maritimes where he met his wife-to-be
Daphne in St. John's, Newfoundland. After the war, Ralph and Daphne
moved to Saskatoon where he obtained his B.A. and B. Accounting
degrees at the University of Saskatchewan and subsequently his C.A.
designation. They were soon blessed with Carol, their first child and
then, after moving to Vancouver, a second child, Gordon. Throughout
their sixty years in Vancouver, Ralph and Daphne cultivated and were
blessed by a growing circle of close friends who have surrounded them
with love and compassion to this day. Ralph's work as a C.A. led to
the founding of his own practice. Through amalgamation, he became a
partner in Price Waterhouse until his retirement in 1982. A lifelong
contributor to the profession, Ralph worked on practice reviews for
the Institute of Chartered Accountants of B.C. and volunteered for the
Deaf Children's Society of B.C. until well after retirement. He was
also active in Kiwanis, giving selflessly of his time while claiming
the Kiwanis bridge trophy as his own for many years. Ralph could
always be found on Saturday and Sunday mornings at the first tee at
Marine Drive Golf Club, followed by a game of bridge in the men's
bullpen. His bridge partners will sorely miss his card skills; his
opponents will be relieved. Ralph will always be remembered for his
steady demeanour, his passion for providing a better life for his
family and his love of a good joke. Ralph's funeral will be held at
Shaughnessy Heights United Church (1550 West 33rd Avenue, Vancouver)
on February 16, 2009 at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow in the
church hall. Flowers gratefully declined. The family welcomes
donations in memoriam to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of B.C. (By
Phone: 1-888-473-4636 or Online: www.heartandstroke.bc.ca ). Email
condolences can be sent to conling at rogers.com and/or echanter at
shaw.ca. (To all Ralph's friends and family: Go in Peace. Live
generously, speak truthfully, serve faithfully, pray daily and leave
everything else to God.)

GARVEY Christopher James June 9th, 1930 - January 21st, 2009
Christopher passed away peacefully on January 21st, 2009. He is dearly
missed by his family and many friends in Williams Lake and Vancouver.
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Chris was proud of the "50" years
he spent in Williams Lake, a community he loved and considered the
capstone of his travels and adventures to many parts of the world.
Chris was especially fond of his Yorston Street neighbours and
delightful coffee companions who entertain each other at their weekly
get together. What had intended to be a brief working tour with BC
Hydro during the 1950's quickly turned into a dedicated family life
with his beloved Madeline and two children, John and Christine. He was
so very proud that both his children went on to university. Chris was
a man of many talents and interests and he shared his knowledge
through engaging conversations, stories and unique gifts. He enjoyed
studying and charting the evening sky, collected clocks and maps,
unusual art pieces, and of course, all things nautical. Most
important, Chris treasured the people in his life and had all the time
in the world for absolutely everyone he met. When the nights that he
was able to chart the skies became fewer, Chris quietly moved on to
other adventures in Vancouver. He watched the boats and evening lights
along English Bay and was intrigued by his snowcapped Lions that now
look out for him each day. It is with great sadness that we saw him
go. Chris Garvey was more than engaging. He was magnetic and he was a
gentleman. We know his soul continues on with the joy and work he had
only begun in this life. The Garvey family expresses their sincerest
gratitude to Ruth Mazurkiewicz, Betty Mazurk, Mary Ailport, Janette
Minchau, Dr. Whitman, Dr. Eugene Murphy, Joanne Therrien and Don
Orlesky, friends and staff at Chalmers Lodge and the amazing Care Team
at the VGH Hip Trauma Unit. A celebration of life will take place in
Williams Lake in the Spring.

PENNY Harry Lee Dip. Theology, B.A., B.S.W., M.S.W., L.L.D.Husband,
father, grandfather, great-grandfather, accomplished sailor, social
worker and academic, Harry died peacefully on February 8, 2009 in the
ICU at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, Burlington, following a
difficult surgery. Born in Consort, Alberta on September 30, 1918,
Harry spent his early years in Calgary before moving to Vancouver with
his family during the Depression. He graduated from Kitsilano High
School, then attended UBC and Union College where he became an
ordained minister. With his new wife Goldie (Walker) he traveled to
the tiny Saskatchewan town of Ogema to take a position as minister of
the United Church. After a return to B.C. he began work as a social
worker, a profession that would become his lifelong career. In 1959 he
moved to Hamilton, accepting the position as the first Executive
Director of the Social Planning and Research Council. He was the
founding Director of the School of Social Work at McMaster University
in 1968 and held that position until 1975. In 1985, he was named
Director of the Centre of Continuing Education. In addition to his
professional responsibilities, Harry also served on many committees,
boards and other entities active in social justice issues. Harry loved
to write and authored two books, one on the history of the School of
Social Work and one on the history of the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club.
Social work was his career but sailing was his passion. A longtime
member of RHYC, including serving as Commodore in 1974-75, Harry and
his Viking 28 Evenstar became well known both in Hamilton and at yacht
clubs around western Lake Ontario. Even after his active sailing
career ended at age 82, he was still a regular at RHYC, particularly
enjoying the monthly past-Commodore luncheons. Similarly, at McMaster,
his retirement did not end his association with the university
community. His Tuesday lunches at the University Club were more than
just a social event. For years he would walk the eight miles from his
home in Aldershot to meet with his friends, enjoy a beer and a
sandwich and solve whatever world problems were the topic of the day.
Although the walks to his Tuesday lunch date ended some time ago, he
still attended regularly until just weeks before his hospitalization.
Harry will be greatly missed by his wife of 63 years, Goldie, sons
Burke (Lindsey), Michael (Ruth Ann), grandchildren Colin (Leah),
Rachel and Fiona, great-grandchildren Jocelyn and Gavin, other
extended family members and many friends and colleagues. He was
predeceased by two brothers, Don and Doug, and two sisters, Jeanne
(Fairn) and Greta (MacDonald). In keeping with Harry's wishes, in lieu
of flowers, donations to the School of Social Work Endowment Fund,
McMaster University, will gladly be accepted. We cordially request
that you direct such donations to Advancement Services, McMaster
University, 1280 Main Street West, DTC 125, Hamilton, ON L8S 4L8.
Donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada would also be
appreciated. A memorial service and reception to celebrate Harry's
life will take place at the University Club, McMaster University, on
Wednesday, February 25 from 2 - 5 p.m. On-line tributes may be made at
www.mem.com .
