relocated from Montreal to Victoria in 1987 when he and his wife,
Sylvia retired. Jim was an active member of St. Aidan's United Church,

the Saltire Society and was an Executive Officer and Past President of

CAMPBELL, Joan Marlene (nee Riddell) Mom was born November 4, 1935 in
Swan River, Manitoba. She passed away in Winnipeg on the morning of
April 27, 2009. She is survived by her sons David of Alberta and Don
(Carolyne) of Winnipeg. She is also survived by her grandchildren
Kendra, Tiffany and Tasha, her sister Beth Yetman (Ralph) of White
Rock, B.C., her aunt Lois McKay of Swan River, her nieces and nephews
and many great nieces and nephews and for good measure some greatgreat
nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Bob Riddell Sr.
and his wife Shirley, both of whom Mom dearly missed after their
separate passings in 2004. Ironically, Mom passed on Shirley's
birthday. She will be missed by many friends in Winnipeg and Victoria.
She was particularly looking forward to Janet's visit in May and
enjoyed her regular calls with Mary in Victoria, Jean in Winnipeg and
her sister Beth. Mom didn't have an easy ride in this life. But it
didn't mean she didn't persevere and succeed. She graduated as the
Governor General's Award winner from Viscount Alexander Collegiate and
obtained her Bachelor of Human Ecology (as it would now be called)
from the University of Manitoba, winning numerous awards during the
course of her university studies. She eventually landed back in
Winnipeg in 1971 after great experiences in Europe and across Canada
and the United States, a single (divorced) mother, starting from
scratch with two boys, a 6 and 10 year-old in tow. Not easy stuff. She
re-integrated herself into the workforce and eventually ran the
dietetics department at the Deer Lodge Centre where she took pride in
her support for the veterans in her care. While there she managed to
dodge the curveballs thrown her way and went back to school to the
University of Manitoba in the late 1980's (I would carpool with her
some days; my other friend in the car said she drove conservatively
when I was in the car, but like a NASCAR driver if I wasn't go
figure). She retired in 1993 after her dear friend and companion Dick
Tritt passed away. She really enjoyed her time with Dick and the many
years at Victoria Beach. She moved to Victoria in 1994 to be closer to
Bob and Shirley and those were also very satisfying years for her. Her
health deteriorated, unfortunately, and she moved back to Winnipeg in
the fall of 2007. She didn't always make the best roommate while she
convalesced, but was always unfailingly polite and she was able to
convey what she wanted absolutely she let you know. She moved into the
Westhaven in 2008 and lived there until her passing. We want to extend
the greatest amount of gratitude to the staff at the Westhaven, the
home care nurses and the home health care aids. I am told that we have
the best home-care treatment program in the country and I believe it.
We are truly fortunate in Manitoba and my mother was able to live on
her own till the end. If you haven't gone and said a hearty thank you
to a health care worker or nurse or staff at a facility who is taking
care of a loved one; go do it now, they positively deserve it. Thank
you for making our Mom's last year and a half as comfortable as
possible it is so much appreciated. And thank you to Irene for all of
your help and friendship over the past 18 months. In accord with Mom's
wishes, there will be no service. Cards of condolence may be sent to
257 Wharton Blvd. Winnipeg, MB, R2Y 0T3. A donation may be made to a
charity of your choice. 538594

2009 at Eagle Park Care Facility in Qualicum Beach. Born December 10,
1913 in Vancouver, Jack's family traveled by train to Qualicum Beach.

important asset during the Second World War, employed many local men
in the community. Jack married Jean Macdonald in 1948 and built their
