Hi Marg,
Barnsley Canal was one of the 'residue' canals when the canals were
nationalised years ago, which meant it was abandoned, so perhaps British
Waterways will not be able to help.
Much of it disappeared...was filled in...etc.
There is a canal society now which is intent on restoring the canal (with
some changes in route where the old route was built over) and its adjoining
canal, the Dove and Dearn. They would know a lot of the canals history, I
imagine. I have had a look at the Barnsley web pages, but can't find any
reference to the canal. You might find that one of the following will give
you an address. The Barnsley Canal Society has no web site of its own.
