Yes, I am descended from William Turton and Pheobe White though I have not
got the Turtons back to 1597! They seem to disappear back into the masses of
Birmingham, a generation before William and Phebe!

If you obtain a copy of the marriage licence allegation dated 1790 you will
see that William was just 21 and Phebe under age. Phebe's father was away on
the canal so the Parish Officials got her mother to make her mark consenting
to the match (she was too lame to come to the wedding) and a friend of
Phebe's father to testify that he knew he consented to the match.

Why all the effort? Examination of the parish registers for Oldbury show
that Phoebe had an illegitimate child Sarah White just months previously.
The parish officials were desperate to get them married! No doubt these
canals people were rather a law unto themselves

The marriage took place in Halesowen as Oldbury was not licensed for
weddings

Phoebe White's brother John White left a Will describing himself as a coal
dealer - no doubt transporting it along the canals!

Does anyone else know about Oldbury in the Black Country and the canals
people there?

Staffs. through to William b1775 married to Phebe White
Do you recognize any connection?
