I have 4 questions which I'm hoping someone could answer,

My g grandmother received 200.00 compensation in 1901 after her husband had an accident and died (bag of corn broke his back). As I believe this was quite unusual for a wife to receive any money - am I correct in thinking that it was the 'companys' 'fault'?

2. At the time of his death - although they were working the barge - the address was 'Hesketh Row, Barbridge' (a house?) Did a bargee have to be earning quite a bit to house his family at that time?

3. He left a will of 18.00. Would this have been a lot in those days?

4. As his wife wasn't born & bred on the barges (although she always lived near the docks - joining her husband aged 15) would she have likely carried on the work with 4 young children - or gave up the 'job'? (she did have 218.00 by then!!!)

Thanks
Jane
