The list letter regarding barges - size and the differences in what types of
loads they carried etc was really interesting. Thank you for all the
informtion. I am curious as to which census records hold the information
stated - and are these accessible on line? Our family owned barges that
worked the Thames, Lambeth, Middlesex and around Battersea Bridge area.
Are there web sites we can access free on line, census and directories ?
Cheers and thanks Valerie

There are records like census which name boats (may useful records
posted on this list and you can search back postings) and some boat
registration records for boats with accommodation (usually naming boat
and captain) in county record offices. Trade directories (some online)
are useful too. There were lots of salt agents and salt wharves at
Anderton by the famous lift - they tried to load boats on the right side
of the lift to avoid the delay and cost.
It would make a lot of difference if you knew whether your man worked
the T&M or the River Weaver side of Anderton.
Barges (big river style boats not narrow boats) were also loaded via salt
chutes at Anderton to save time and fees on passage up/down the lift, from
narrow boats (7' wide and not barges, being built specifically for canals)
it is
an important difference between barges and boats because only the narrow
boats
would have been able to make the journey via Trent and Mersey canal or the
Shropshire Union to transport the salt (and other products) across the
country.
